At the International rifle match at Washington, Penton, of the Irish team, made 170, and Slade, New South Wales, 170. Both received'medals. In another contest at 800 yards, Fenton made 48, an American, 48, and Slade 45. THfi WAR. Singapore, October 10. A Council under the presidency of Prince Milan has resolved to fight till Servia and Bosnia are independent. On September 28th General Tchernaieff crossed the river Morava, above Alexanitz, and attacked the Turks. Both claimed a victory. General Haavotizich and his corps threatened the Turkish rear. The Chinese difficulty is settled and an indemnity paid to Mr Margary's family. AUSTRALIA. Sydney, October 11. The City of New York arrived at 2 a.m. The cable steamer Agnes has arrived from Singapore. A report is current of the abandonment of the Pacific service. The City of New York takes this month's mails, and no provision apparently has been made for the next month. Melbourne, October 11. A burglary was effected at the residence of Mr J. T. Smith, and money to the amount of over £IOO stolen. The Arawata leaves for the Bluff tomorrow, and the Ringarooma with the Suez mails on Monday via Hokitika. INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland, October 11-. The missionary schooner Southern Cross has &rrived from a cruise. The Rev Mr Selwyn is a passenger. She visited the Santa Cruz group, where the natives gave an account of the reason for the murder of Bishop Patteson. One native said he had warned the Bishop against going to Wakawu. The murder was perpetrated in revenge for an outrage by a labor vessel on a canoe, in which four natives were killed and four taken away. The Rev Father Paul'e furniture has been again seized for the education rate. Auckland, October 12. In the case Jones and Ware v Messrs Brogden, the Judge decided virtually for the defendants, but held that the plaintiffs were entitled to an extension of time when the additions and alterations were made by the defendants' orders. Wellington, October 11. The following tenders have been received by the Government for No 3 contract, station buildings—Timaru to Waitaki railwav: (accepted), Mr T. H. Parson, Timaru, £3559; declined, Mr J. Ogilvie, £3797 ; Mr T. R. Jones, £3897 ; Mr G. Filmer, £3985. Westport, October 11. The sale of the bull and engines, &c, of the Matau realised £620. The sundries fetched a good price. Dunedin, October 11. J. M. Russell wan charged to-day by Mr SmyihiflS with perjury in 1867. No action has been taken here yet with regard to Sir J. Vogel'B testimonial. Rev Geo Morrice, late of Napier, has accepted an unanimous call to the Presbyterian Church at Hokitika. Dunedin, October 12. The following is a copy of the telegram sent by the Superintendent to the Governor —"Dunedin, October 11th. I regret that by some inadvertence copy following telegram sent by me to Secretary of State for the Colonies was not forwarded to your Excellency as intended, by the mail. ' Dunedin, October 6tb. Right Hon the Secretary of State for the Colonies. Urgent. Abolition Provinces Act passed last session General Assembly being forced into operation, notwithstanding the strenuous opposition of the people of Otago, constituting about third of the population of the colony. Am advised said Act founded on cap 92 of 32 Vic. is ultra vires Have the honor to suggest that the said Act be referred to her Majesty's Attorney-General, with the view of disallowance if void. Deep feeling of wrong pervades the province. Provincial Executive pressed to convene the Provincial Council, and assert political rights conferred by the Constitution Act. —Macandrew.' "
