DEATH BY FIRE AT LYTTELTON
It is with great regret that we have to record the untimely death by fire of the wife of Mr J. Jenkins, at her [residence, Coleridge street, Lyttelton. Last night the unfortunate lady was just retiring to rest, about 10 p.m., and had occasion to go from the bedroom to the kitchen. She had only her night dress on, and was carrying a kerosene lamp, when by some means, as she was passing through the passage, it fell and broke into pieces, and the oil caught fire and set alight to Mrs Jenkins’ clothes and the paper on the wall. No doubt, distracted with fear, there being no one in the house except Mr J. Jenkins, whp has long been helm less, the poor lady ran out into the verandah. Mr Robinson, of Norwich Quay, was passing, and at once ran up to the house, tore off the sufferer’s burning clothes, and extinguished the fire, and medical assistance was at once procured. All, however, was in vain, she never rallied from the shcck, but expired between 7 and 8 this morning. An enquiry will be held this afternoon.
