CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, September 30. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Drunk and Creating a Disturbance.— Wm Hall, charged with being drunk and creating a disturbance in the Golden Age Hotel, was fined 10s. Drunk and Disorderly.— James McConnaohie was fined 10s, and an inebriate who appeared the first time, and had been admitted to bail, was fined in a similar amount. Drunk and Using Obscene Language. —George Tragesser, arrested for this offence, was fined 10s. Larceny oe a Watch.— Wm Elliott was charged on remand with stealing a watch the property of Joseph Sparkes. Accused had been arrested on the 27 th instant at the Christchurch Railway Station. When arrested he said he had purchased the watch from a man. Joseph Sparkes, the prosecutor, called, stated that he lived at the Halswell. On the 3rd June last he received a watch from WLr

Sutherland at the Junction Hotel. He put it into his waistcoat pocket. Accused was there when he got it. Witness afterwards pulled his coat and vest off and laid them on the road. He did so for the purpose of fighting a man. Accused was present at the time. When he put his vest on again the watch was missing. Made his loss known to the accused who was living near his place. The watch produced was the one he lost. Prisoner had no right to take or dispose of it. Valued the watch at £5. Reported his loss to the police. In reply to accused witness would not swear he (accused) stole the watch. Three other persons were present at the time. Accused on the following morning helped witness to look for the watch. Witness was rather drunk when he went to fight the other man. John Wilson called, deposed to purchasing the pawn ticket produced from the accused, for a watch, at the Warwick Hotel, on the 27th instant. He afterwards went to Herman’s, pawnbroker, and redeemed the watch produced. Harry Winney, employed at Mr Herman’s, stated that accused pawned the watch produced at the shop on the 17th July last. He gave the name of Charles Burke, The last witness subsequently redeemed it. In reply to the Bench, accused said he had purchased the watch for 17s from a man named Peter Hallam, near Addington. His Worship told accused that, as this was his first offence, he would deal leniently with him. Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor.
