WIFE DESERTION.
To the Editor of the Globe
Sir, —I wish to draw your attention to th« number of men brought up under this charge, and yet never convicted. Imprimis, a man is arrested in Dunedin for the above offence, and brought to Christchurch; the only evidence of his guilt being that he wanted two front teeth. Secundus, a man is brought from Wellington to Christchurch—his wife being in a critical state—and has the supreme satisfaction of knowing that she may be dead or alive ; and the magistrate tells him that he is extremely sorry that he was arrested and all that sort of thing and tells him {the accused) that arrangements would be made for his transit to Wellington. Now, sir, don’t you think that that man should go down on his knees and pray that the laws of the country may not be altered 7 I am, &c, VERITAS.
