Bush Inn Eoad Bridge —The bridge on the Bush Inn road, near Ham, will be closed for repairs until next Saturday evening.
Immigrants per Waitangi.— These immigrants were landed yesterday, with the exception of forty that are destined for Timaru, and twenty that proceeded to Akaroa in the s.s Akaroa yesterday. Fires on Roads. —At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Rangiora, on Tuesday, in reference to the practice which obtains of persons burning gorse on roads, the Bench stated that in future penalties would he inflicted on persons charged with this offence, as it was considered that fires on the road side were a source of danger to persons on horseback or in vehicles.
Inquest. —An inquest was held yesterday at the hospital, before J. W. S. Coward, Esq, coroner, on the body of Mr Jonathan Booker, who met with an accident in Cashel street while getting into his cart, on Saturday last. The medical evidence went to show that deceased’s skull had been fractured by the fall, and that there had also been concussion of, and effusion of blood on, the brain. The jury returned a verdict of 11 Accidental Death.” Entertainment. —An entertainment was given last evening at the Congregational schoolroom, in aid of the Sunday school fund. Mr S. C. Farr occupied the chair, and there was a very good attendance. The programme consisted of songs, part songs, duets and readings, and was disposed of in a very pleasing manner. Votes of thanks were passed to those ladies and gentlemen who had contributed to the evening’s amusement.
Opening of the Boating Season. — A meeting of representatives from the Canterbury and Union Bowing Clubs, and the Canoe Club, was held last evening, at Warner’s Hotel. Mr H. Thomson was voted to the chair, and Mr Kilgour was requested (o set as secretary. It was decided to open the boating season with a procession of boats, to be followed by scratch races on Saturday, 7th Oct. Mr Thomson consented to act as marshal and judge, and MrT, Douglas as starter and umpire. It was resolved that the procession should start punctually at three o’clock, the scratch races for four-oar, pairs, and canoes to be so arranged that no delay should occur in starting the different events. It was agreed to engage a first-class band for the afternoon;
C.J.O.—A general meeting of the members of the Canterbury Jockey Club was held yesterday at 4 p.m. A letter was read from the secretary of the A.J O. in reference to the conference of the various N Z. clubs ; the secretary was instructed to reply to the effect that the C.J.O. entirely concurred in the views as expressed in the letter from the Auckland Club, and would take steps to further the object. Mr Stead gave notice of motion to amend Rule 3 as follows : —“ Any person desirous of becoming a member of the C.J.O. shrdl be proposed by two members in writing to the secretary, and such proposal shall be posted in the Club-room on a board provided for the purpose, and the person proposed shall be ballotted for at the first meeting after such proposal has been posted ; provided that such meeting be not held until after the expiration of one month from the time of the proposal being posted ; one black ball in five to exclude.” The meeting then adjourned. Cathedral Guild. --The annual general meeting of the Guild was held last evening, at the College library. The Very Rev the Dean presided. After some introductory remarks the rev chairman read the annual report, showing the work done by the Guild, and the very satisfactory progress made during the past year. The statement of accounts showed the receipts for that time to have been £421 12s lOd ; expenditure in connection with Cathedral commission, £273 14s 9d ; other expenses, £72 16s ; leaving a credit balance of £75 2s Id. The election of officers for the ensuing twelve months then took place as follows :—Vice-presidents, the Very Rev the Dean and Mr H. B. Gresson ; secretary. Mr A. W. Bennett ; trea surer, Mr A, Thompson ; committee, Rev Canon Cotterill, Rev J. W. Stack, Dr Symes, and Messrs A. B. Worthy, G. Mclntyre, F. G. Stedman, J, S. Jameson, G. Tynes, Holloway, and Evans. Mr R. Parker read a memorial of the late Rev Dr Dykes, with illustrations from his musical works. A number of extracts were also read by Dr Symes. During the evening the Guild choir sang a selection of music. Leeston Cricket Club.— The annual meeting of Ihe club was held at Loe’s Leeston Hotel, on Monday evening. Owing to the state of the weather the attendance of members was not so great as it otherwise would have been, only sixteen gentlemen being present. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed, and auditors having been appointed, the accounts and vouchers were gone through seriatim . and having been inspected were unanimously adopted. The treasurer’s statement for tire past year, which showed a credit balance of £24 15s 7d, with no outstanding liabilities, and a numerical strength of forty-nine paying members, against fortytwo in the previous season, was considered highly satisfactory to the interests of cricket in°the neighborhood of Leeston. The following office-bearers were then elected for the ensuing year President, W. J. G. Bluett, Esq; captain, Mr Loe; treasurer, Mr A. Loe ; secretary, Mr G. Tremaine ; and a committee to consist of Messrs W. G. Lunn, J. Manson, F, G. Oradock, H; J. Watts, H. Corbett, and J. Bourn. Several matters of routine were gone into, and votes of thanks accorded to Mr Loe, for having prepared, entirely at his own cost, a ground in the centre of the township, which, from its position and careful preparation, is likely to prove second to none in Canterbury ; to the officers of the past season, and to the chairman, and the meeting adjourned, after deciding to have their opening match on the first Wednesday in October, and to celebrate the occasion with a dinner in the evening.
Canterbury College Annual Examination. —The annual examination in connection with the Canterbury College will commence on Monday, October 9th, and students who intend to enter for this year must send in their names to the registrar on or before the 30th inst, and also the subjects in which they wish to be examined.
.Lyttelton Regatta. —A public meeting to arrange for holding a regatta on Ist January, 1877, was held at the Colonists’ Hall on Monday evening last. The attendance was small, not more than thirty being present. His Worship the Mayor was in the chair. The minutes of the last general meeting having been confirmed, the treasurer, Mr J. G. Boddington, read the financial statement, from which it appeared that there wag a sum of £IOO 16s 2d to the credit of the committee for 1876, £IOO of which was on deposit, the interest of which, on January 3rd, would be £5 10s, so that there was really a sum of £lO6 6s 2d available from last year, without reckoning that they had plenty of rules printed, as well as a good plant from last year. Mr Eyes moved, and Mr F. Graham seconded —“ That the report be received and adopted.” Carried. It was then proposed by Mr F, Graham, seconded by Mr Eyes, and carried—“ That the usual regatta be held on January Ist, 1877.” Mr J. 0. Boddington said that before the meeting proceeded to elect their officers, he had a suggestion to make, which was, that a smaller committee than that of last year should be appointed. As he imagined no one present was prepared to propose a commodore, he thought that instead of proceeding in the usual way they should elect a committee and hou secretary and hon treasurer, leaving the other to the committee appointed. This was seconded by Mr Lance. Mr H. Allwright saw no reason from departing from the usual course, and moved as an amendment —“ That Mr W. Bolleston be appointed patron.” Mr Boddington then withdrew his proposition, and seconded Mr Allwright’s motion, which was agreed to. Mr Cunningham proposed, and Mr Byes seconded —“ That Mr H, P. Murray-Aynsley be commodore.” Carried. Mr Cunningham proposed, and Mr Bonnington seconded—- “ That Mr H. E. Webb be vice-commodore.” Agreed to. Mr Lance moved, and Mr Cunningham seconded— 11 That Mr J, G. Boddington be hon treasurer.” Carried. Mr Boddington moved, and Mr Ockford seconded—“ That Mr Jacobson be honorary secretary,” Carried. The following gentlemen were elected to serve on the committee : —Messrs Cunningham, Rouse, Nalder, P. Graham, Lance, Agar, Taylor, Norris, W. Cameron, Eyes, Horn, Hobbs, Little, Rich, Allwright, H. Hawkins, F. Ward, Yule, H. McDonald, White, Parsons, Young, Packard, Willcox, Captains Gibson, McLellan, Whitby, and McClatchie, with power to add to their number. It was resolved that a committee meeting be called within eight days. After votes of thanks to the retiring officers and the chair, the meeting dispersed.
