NEWS OF THE DAY.
Governor's Bay.—The steam launch Lyttelton is advertised to run to and from this picturesque bay to-morrow. Lyttelton Regatta, 1877.—The public meeting, for arranging for this regatta, is postponed until Monday evening, September 13th.
E. M. Court.—There were only two cases before the Bench at the Magistrate's Court this morning. William McKay George, for drunkenness, was fined 10s ; and an inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was fined 5s and cab hire.—At Lyttelton, William Jones, for being drink and disorderly, was fined 10s. Inquest.—An inquest was held yesterday at the hospital on the body of John Williams who died in the hospital on Wednesday night, having only taken ill that morning. The evidence given confirmed the particulars of our notice yesterday. Dr Guthrie, who made the post mortem examination; described the condition of deceased's lungs, which were in a very bad state. Death had, however, resulted from aneurism of the aorta of the heart. The jury returned a verdict of " Died from natural causes." Accident. —An accident occurred on Thursday, the 14th inst, which resulted in a broken leg to a manjnamed William Hawkey, who was driving a horse-power chaff cutter belonging to Mr H. J. Hall, of Birdling Brook farm, near Leeston. It appears that when getting on to the seat his foot slipped and caught in the cog wheels of the horsepower, which originally belonged to a threshing machine, and had the large driving wheel with its cogs unprotected. The spindle came round and completely doubled up his leg, causing a severe fracture below th* knee. The patient was immediately removed to Leeston, where his leg was promptly set by Dr Chapman, pending his removal to the Ohristchurch Hospital. O.R.C.—Committee meeting of this club was held at Maples's Garrick Hotel yesterday evening. There was a good attendance of members, Mr Jones (captain) in the chair. Mr B, T. Weedon was elected a member in the usual way. Tenders to the number of five were received for alterations and additions to bathroom, and that of Mr William Verrall was accepted. The chairman stated that Mr Sandsteinhad kindly offered a hand some cup to be rowed for by members of the club. It was unanimously agreed that Mr Sandstein's offer be accepted with thanks. Messrs S. S. Bevans and Thomas Douglas also stated that they would give prize! dnrlng the season.
The San Francisco Mail.—This mail arrived yesterday per City of Sydney. All the bags not for Lyttelton were forwarded to Chriatchurch by the 9.10 a.m train. There were sixty-six packages in all, viz, forty-four for Christchurch, seven for Lyttelton, nine for Timara, and six for Oamaru.
Pbesbytebian Chubch Choib op Pbebbleton.—A very interesting meeting of this choir took place on Thursday last, at which the Bev James P. Wilson was presented with a handsome gift by the members of the choir for his kindness in training them for service in the music of the church. Miss Marion Prebble, ia the name of the choir, presented the gift.
Kumaba Rush.—The Press Malvern correspondent writes:—" The new gold diggings are evidently attracting a good many from this side of the ranges, for it is a very long time since I have seen so many ' swaggers bound for the West. Besides those on foot, the train frequently brings thirty or forty to the terminus, who proceed in the same direction.
Bazaab.—The bazaar at the Durham street schoolroom was continued yesterday, closing at 10 o'clock last evening. A large number of sales were effected by the ladies at the various stalls, and the galvanic battery and unexplained puzzle were sources of considerable profit. The proceeds altogether amount to over £IOO, and the articles remaining unsold will be disposed of privately, Shipping.—The New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, have received telegraphic advices from London, conveying the following shipping intelligence—" Arrived, the Waipa, on the 6th instant, after a passage of eightysix days. Sailed, Bangitiki, for Lyttelton ; Ocean Mail, for Wellington; Samaya, for Auckland ; Waitara, for Napier and Bluff ; and Avon, for Otago. Loading, for Auckland, Jessie Osborn and Loch Urr ; for Wellington, the Hurunuij; for Canterbury, the Valparaiso and Cardigan Caßtle ; for Otago, the Olan McLeod and Otaki.
