Five inebriates, who appeared for the first time, were each fined ss. Vagrancy. —Thomas Mitchell was charged on warrant under the Vagrant Act with having no lawful visible means of support. Accused had been arrested by Detective Neill in a house of ill-fame on Saturday last, in Chester street. He was in the habit of acting as a pimp for several women, and he had seen him on various occasions endeavoring to induce men to go with him. Many persons had complained to witness about accused’s conduct. Detective Bettington gave corroborative evidence as to the life led by accused. He knew that the man had no lawful means of support, and he never did any work. Sergeant Hughes gave similar testimony. In reply to the Bench, accused said he had some letters in his pocket taken from him in the lock-up, which would prove that he had £502 in his pocket when he came to Christchurch. Since arrested he had also learnt that sufficient money would be sent from up-country to take him away from here.
