MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, September 1. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, R.M.) Disobeying an order of the Court. — Noah Symons was charged on warrant with disobeying an order of the Court to pay £1 per week towards the support of his wife. Mrs Symons stated that her husband had not paid her anything for the last five weeks. Ordered to pay arrears £5 within four weeks, or be imprisoned for one month. Deserting her Child. —Margaret Kyle, who had been committed for contempt of Court the previous day,, was charged with deserting her child by placing it on the floor of the Court and leaving it there. She had refused to return or take charge of it, and that morning'a constable had to carry it over from the police depot. Accused said she had nothing to maintain the child with, and would not try to do so. His Worship told ther that he knew she had lately received a sum of money which she had spent in other ways. She must remember that it was her duty to look after the child. She might go, but she would have to take care of the infant and properly too. Accused then said she would not have anything to do with the child, even if she were sent to gaol for it. The woman again placed the child on the floor and left the Court. His Worship had her brought back, and sentenced her to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labor. Drunk and Disorderly.— Alex. Nicol was fined 10s. An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, and was still suffering from the affects of drink, was remanded for eight days for medical treatment. Brutal Assault. —Anthony Derrick was charged with brutally assaulting his wife the previous night. Dr Robinson, house surgeon at the Hospital, stated that the woman was brought to the Hospital by Constable Brooks late the previous night. She was very weak and faint from loss of blood, flowing from a rough ragged wound which might have been caused by a severe kick from a boot. She had also been bruised, and from what he had heard from her past life he did not consider the woman was yet out of danger. If all went well with her she might be able to appear in a fortnight. On the application of Inspector Buckley the case was remanded until the 9tb instant. LYTTELTON. Friday, September 1. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.)
