Barnard, Handicapper. *** *The ages are given for the time of running, In his Turf Gossip of the same issue “ Augur ” says : “ The weight-for-age scale, as revised by the Y.R.C. sub-committee, was adopted by a majority of the members present at the meeting on Monday last. There was plenty of opposition, however, and from men who are quite as much interested in turf affairs as those in favour of the new scale. There was a great deal of sound reasoning in the arguments advanced in favour of four-year-olds having less weight during the first four or five months of the season. With the exception of the weight given to four-year olds during the spring, the scale is an admirable one ; but as the members of the subcommittee made up their minds to reduce the five and six-year-olds, I think it is to be regretted that they did not also give the fours a chance. I cannot understand why there should not be a slight sliding scale for the four-year-olds as well as other ages, except that we are supposed to be blind adherents to the rule of thumb principles of the very old school of racing, I don’t think the extraordinary addition of 21bs upon the three-year-olds will have the slightest effect upon the result of the Champion Race, which looks like a foregone conclusion for one of the younger ones, whether the race is run under the old or the new scale. About this there seemed to be considerable difference of opinion. However, if the committee determine that the Champion Race shall be run under the new scale, I don’t suppose anybody will be foolish enough to go to law with them, for the game is not worth the candle, as some of our racing men can testify.” As to the betting market, for the V.R.O. Derby, Newminster, who had retrograded in the betting since Monday, owing to an accident, is now firmer, and 3 to 1 was not obtainable to money. The colt is not believed to have sustained any serious injury. There is little speculation on the Melbourne Cup, owing to the absence of several members of the ring, but 1000 to 50 was wanted about Feu d’Artifice ; the next offer, however, was 500 to 30. A. J.
