Oust, —An evening’s interesting and instructive entertainment was given by Mr H. H. Cholmondeley at the Oust old schoolroom on Tuesday last, consisting of views of travel, &c, in the Arctic Regions, shown by the aid of the magic lantern, and described by Mr Cholmondeley, with notes from the accounts furnished by the principal explorers in these regions. The room was densely packed with children, who were admitted free, and appeared especially delighted with the amusing character of some of the views. The proceeds of the entertainment, which amounted to £3 9s 6d, were kindly handed over by Mr Cholmondeley to the Parsonage Building Fund. It was decided to hold another entertainment, interspersed with music, readings, Sec, in about a fortnight’s time, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to the same purpose, and wo hope it may be as successful in every way as the list. Raiapoi Borough Council.— The fortnightly meeting for despatch of ordinary business was held on Tuesday evening. Present—The Mayor, Crs Blackwell, Porter, Parnham, Ellen, Smethurst, Milsom, Wear ing, and Funston. A letter was read from the Provincial Engineer, stating that as £1340 of the £I4OO for protective workwas expended, and the works at Mesa's Birch and Co’s wharf were essential to the completion of the protective plan, they would be proceeded with so soon as the Council voted £270. On the motion of Cr Ellen, seconded by Cr Porter, it was resolved that the £270 be paid, so that the protective works might be finished forthwith. Cr Parnham, chairman works committee, refmrted that good metal was now being deiveredi for the streets. Cr Ellen, ehairnaau
planting committee, said from Boys’ street to Commercial road was now planted, and weeping willows put in along the embankments. About 3500 willows, including a few ornamental trees, had been planted at a cost of £6, The receipts for the fortnight were-Grant, £125; rates, £ls 7s ; Court fines, £4. The balance in the Bank was £144 7s. Accounts amounting to £l4 15s were passed, when the Council then adjourned.
