CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, August 7. (Before G. L. Mcllish, Esq, R.M) Drunk and Disorderly.— Two inebriates, who appeared for the? first time, were lined Osjeach. James Hcslop, Michael Ryan, and Edward Brown were lined 10s each. Drunk and Insulting Females. James Stoddart was charged with being drunk and insulting some females in Colombo street on Saturday night. Constable Edge had seen accused put his arm round one female in that street. Mr James Gapes stated that he saw accused put his arm .round several females in Colombo street. He (accused) went up as far as the Bank of New Zealand, and witness followed him. Opposite the Bank accused accosted a female and followed her down the street, annoying her. He then went into the Golden Fleece hotel, and witness went inside and #xuti< H3d the barman against serving him with liquor, Fined 60s. Drunk and Using Obscene Language. —James Shrader was charged with being drunk and using obscene language on Saturday night, in front of his dwelling house, iu Peterbororgh street. Some neighbors gave evidence of accused’s general conduct, which was a nuisance to the neighbourhood. The expressions used by him on Saturday evening were most disgraceful. Sentenced to three month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Larceny prom a Dwelling.— Joseph Haskett was charged with breaking open a child’s money box belonging to Jules Seelies, and abstracting some money therefrom. When arrested, accused had 12s 9d on him, consisting of shillings, sixpences, threepenny pieces (two with holes iu), and one farthing. Some of the money found on him had a corroded appearance similar to 4s 9d which was left in the box, Jules F, M. Seelies stated that he resided iu George street. Accused came to his house between 9 and 10 o’clock the previous morning. He said he had no money and asked permission to lie down on the sofa, W itness went away for a little time, and when he returned his boy told him that his money box, which had been kept iu the bedroom, had been broken open and nearly all the money taken out. The box contained about £2 IQs. Accused had no right to touch the box or take any money out of it. A son of accused gave corroborative evidence, and said that after the accused had gone to sleep he (witness) weat out, and when returning to the house he fancied he heard a noise inside, but when he got in the man was still on the sofa and seemed to be snoring. He had not been far away and was sure no one had come into the house during his absence. He had occasion to go to his money-box before he went out, to put sixpence in, and it was then all right. There was a half-crown, a two shilling piece, and a lot of shillings and sixpences, some threepenny pieces, and a farthing in it. There were two holes in two of the threepenny pieces. Produced 4s 9d which was left in the box. About £2 6s had been taken out of it. Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
