Taranaki came in at 11.30 a.m. yesterday from South. Captain Andrew, formerly of the Phoebe, is in command, as the Union Company, having determined to lay up the latter vessel, gave the command of the Taranaki to Captain Andrew, because he was the senior officer. Her late commander, Capt Lloyd, was a great favorite here, and It is to be hoped the Union Company will put him in command of one of their boats as soon as a vacancy occurs. The Taranaki left Port Chalmers at 6 p.m. on the 27th, and had light head winds and calms to arrival. She was berthed at No 2 wharf, and having completed her discharge, sailed North at 3 p.m. The Taranaki arrived here a full boat having taken on board fully 251) tons of cargo for North at ;i Port Chalmers. The Union Company’s smart steamer Wellington, Captain Carey, arrived yesterday morning at 10.30 а. and was moored at the Screw-pile jetty. From Mr M'Cormack, the purser, whom we thank for files and report, we learn that she left Manakau on the 24th. at 11.30 a.m.; arrived at Taranaki at б. a.m. on the 25th ; left at 10.15 a.m ; reached Nelson at 7 a.m. 26th; left 11.15 a.m same day, and arrived at Picton 7.30 p.m.: started again after an hour’s stay, and reached Wellington at 2-30 a.m. 27th; left 3.30 p.m., and arrived as above. The Wellington brought 50 tons of cargo, 45 of which is grain for the Fernglen, having taken 60 tons of outward cargo. She sailed lor South at 6 p.m. last O'ght.
THE TITAN. The steam tug Titan that has been purchased by Messrs Cameron Bros for use in this port arrived yesterday morning at 10 a.m. Mr John Cameron came round in her irom Hokitika. She will prove a great acquisition to the port, as such a vessel is much needed here. The Titan is a double-engined tug of 55 horse power, nominal, but is capable of working up to 180, and it is said will be able to tow any ship, without the weather is extremely bad. Her real measurement is 97 01 tons under deck, but her engines take up such a large portion of her hull, that site is only registered at 21 tons. Her dimensions are as follows length, 95 feet 6 inches, beam, 17 feet 4 inches, depth of hold, 8 feet 8 inches. She iw-schooncr-rigged, and was built in 1856 by Barclay, Curie and Co, of Glasgow, and has been used as a tug boat for a long time by the Westland Steam Tug and Freight Company, at Hokitika. She left Hokitika on Sunday morning last, having towed out the schooner Lady Don, and went into the Grey to coal that night’s tide. Left again at noon on Tuesday with a strong south-west breeze, and Wednesday went up Queen Charlotte’s Sound and anchored at the head of Tory Channel, as there was a heavy sea and a prospect of bad weather. Left on Thursday morning at 7.30 a.m., steamed out of other opening of Tory Channel, and bad strong head winds and fine weather, till arrival here at IQ a.m.
