CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, July 26. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.] Drunk and Disorderly.—Alice O'Neill, charged with this offence, was fined 20s. Larceny.—Ellen Greig and Catherine O'Connor, two respectable looking women, were charged with stealing a washing board, bucket, flat iron, broom and hoe, belonging to Mrs Mackleane, residing in Salisburystreet. The evidence showed that the accused O'Connor had been living in the same house as the prosecutrix, and when leaving took the articles by mistake, or in place of similar articles which she left behind her, and which prosecutrix admitted were still in her premises. The only charge against Mrs Greig was that the broom had been found in her plaoe. After hearing a portion of the evidence, his Worship dismissed the charge against both defendants. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, July 26. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.] Vagrancy.—John Morris, on remand, was dismissed with a caution. Breach op Prisoners' ah© Gaolers' Act.—Robert Shaw was accused of a breach of this Act. From evidence given it appeared that accused had purchased a bottk of brandy at the Canterbury Hotel, and thai a similar bottle had been secreted by one oi the prisoners and was found on him by Warden Mclntyre. The bottle had been found by prisoner McGuinness planted neai where the prisoners usually worked, and as accused was seen in the immediate locality, and had only been discharged from gaol s day or two ago, it was argued by the polio that he had planted the bottle in the placi where it was found in accordance with i previous arrangement with prisoner McGuin ness. The Bench sentenced accused to si: weeks' imprisonment with hard, labour.
