Melbourne.—The “ Argus ” of the 17th instant reports :—ln the import market business throughout the forenoon was characterised by the same languor and want of animation which marked the earlier portion of the week, closing, moreover, without any promise of improvement. In breadstuffs flour is very firm, and there are no sellers under £l2 15s to £l3 17s Gd, at which trade parcels are quitted, but no sales to which the slightest interest is attached have been reported. Wheat does not present quite so strong an aspect; 6s 2d is still asked for prime samples by almost all holders; but buyers are not so eager to operate as a short time ago, and a trifle less might not be refused to effect a sale. Oats are very firm, and 3s to 3s 3d can readily be obtained for good to fine heavy New Zealand. There is;not much inquiry for the commoner descriptions of feeding sorts ; we quote 2s 9d to 2s lOd. Maize is unaltered; importers still ask 3s lOd, and are very firm at the quotation; buyers, however, can only be got to operate with the greatest difficulty, being |as yet unwilling to concede the slight improvement required. Hops are still in a manner neglected. We hear, however, of common qualities of Tasmanian, about 30 bales, having been quitted at is 2d. Malt is likewise very slow, and, as a rule, only trifling lots for actual requirements are moving at 10s 6d to 10s 9d. A shipment has just been taken up for export at equal to 10s 3d. Sugars arc going off steadily ; a parcel of yellow brewing was placed at £3l. Teas are moving off at all prices, but only for the supply of trade wants. Sales are reported of broken leaf at lOd, of common congous at Is 2d, and of medium to good medium at Is Od to Is Bd. Sales of good common, in boxes, have been made at Is 3d to is 4d. In liquids we report the demand for brandy as very slow. Otard’s is moving off very quietly at 6s 9d to 7s. The same journal of the 15th says:—Regarding new season’s teas, a gram has been received to-day. dated Hong Kong, 24th June, which states that the season opened on the 7th June. The Queensland, steamer, for Melbourne, and the Bowen, for Sydney, were loading. No other steamer was chartered. “Quality of teas same as last year.” From what wc can learn, the Queensland is not expected to leave before the 30th of June. In liquids, we learn that sales of Renault’s case brandy are still making at 325.
