NEWS OF THE DAY.
Lyttelton Borough Schools.—Mr T. B. Mayne has been elected third master of these schools, vice Mr Waddell resigned. Organist of St Luke's.—We regret to state that Mr .Nottingham, who was recently appointed organist of St Luke’s Church, and who was with bis family on his way out from London, met with a fatal accident on board the Lincolnshire. The Late Mr W. Guise Brittan.— The funeral of the late Mr W 4 Guise Brittan took place yesterday afternoon. As a mark of respect the offices of the Provincial Government were closed during the afternoon. The funeral arrangements were of the simplest nature, and carried out in conformity with the rules of the Funeral Reform Association. A plain hearse conveyed the remains, and the mourning carriage contained the relatives of the deceased gentleman, A large number of private carriages followed, many of them being occupied by early colonists. The cortege moved along Montreal street, and by the Whately road to the cemetery at Papanui, of which parish, the liev P. Brittan, sou of the deceased, is incumbent. The funeral service was conducted by the Very Rev the Dean of Christchurch, who was a companion of the late Mr Brittan, and arrived in the colony by the same vessel. Football, —The following are the names of the fifteen selected to represent Christchurch in the match with South Canterbury at Timaru, viz :—Messrs W. H, Atack, J. Barker, E. Chapman, E. J. Cotterill, E, H. Croxton, E. H. Dobson, J. R. Evans (captain), W. Hartland, H. McOardell, L. M. Ollivier, F. Pilling, A. Potts, G. Potts, W. Stringer, and T. S. Sweet; emergency, E. R. Deacon, E, J. Paul, and W. Tosswill. The team will leave by the 7 a.m train on Saturday morning, and return by the 10.25 on Monday, putting up at Lynwood House during their stay in Timaru. A match will take place on Cranmer square on the same day between a Lyttelton fifteen and a club fifteen. The following are the names:—Lyttelton—A, Cuff, Y, Donald, W. H. Griffin, J. W. Holden, F, G. Good Templary. —The anniversary of the establishment of Good Templary in Christchurch was celebrated last evening by a tea and public meeting at the Oddfellows’ Hall, About 700 sat down to tea, after which a public meeting, presided over by the Rev B. J. Westbrooke, took place. The chairman delivered an address, givinga history of the progress of the order in Canterbury since its institution here. The Rev John Elmslie followed with an address ou “ Secret Intemperance,” in which he exposed the evils of secret drinking, eapecially to the mothers of families, to which he ascribed the great mortality of infants in Christchurch, Rev, H. C. M. Watson was the next speaker, and in the course of a very eloquent speech demonstrated the duty of the church in regard to temperance and Good Templary, He explained that by the church he did not mean exclusively ministers, but the great body of Christians generally. The G.W.C;T. Bro Adams, and the G.W. Sec Bro Cameron also addressed the meeting, congratulating the Christchurch brethren upon the large gathering that evening. _ The latter gentleman also gave some statistics with reference to the state of the order. The Rev S. Macfarlane, in a humorous address, concluded the speech making. The musical portion of the evening comprised two piano solos by Mr Neville Barnett; songs by Miss Kent, Miss Ness, and Mrs Amos, Messrs Knox and W. S. Smith, and the various items were loudly applauded. A resolution, approving of Mr Stout’s Local Option Bill, was carried unanimously, and is to be telegraphed to Mr Stout. Altogether, the gathering was a very successful one,
