[Per Alhambra via Hokitika.] Melbourne. Mr John Gavan Duffy has been admitted as attorney, In the Legislative Council Mr Wilson condemned the action of the Government with regard to Stevenson’s case. He thought some mention of the matter should have been made in the speech. The opinion of the public was that the Government had bungled the whole matter, and that their action looked very like persecution. In the Equity Court case Morley v Nisbett, application for a new trial on the ground that the verdict was against evidence, Mrs Nisbet widow of Jas Nisbet, Scotch Jock, disputed his will on the allegation that deceased was not sober when he signed it, that it had not been executed according to law. An inmate of the lunatic asylum at Parramatta has been found dead and mutilated. It is supposed that he was murdered by another patient.
Mr Eae, incarcerated in a libel suit, has been liberated at the instance of the complainant. The schedule of Meyer and Co shows liabilities over £28,000, assets over £II,OOO.
James Courier has been served with a writ, the damages being laid at £SOO, for alleged libel on the Coroner at Young.

A verdict has been given against the Roman Catholic Bishop, on an acceptance for £3OO for goods supplied to the Catholic Book Depot. The two sons of Mr Birrell, bailiff of the Local Court, have brought an action against him for malicious prosecution, but one is committed for perjury, and the other sentenced to six months for assaulting his father in court.

Auckland, July 20.
A man named Carconan, nephew of the landlord of the Greyhound Hotel, getting out of an up-stairs window, apparently to reach an adjoining room, fell to the pavement and was killed. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency produce telegram confirms the late wool reports. It says of tallow, there is less trade demand, mutton 425, beef 41s. The leather market is flat; 4000 sides have been sold since last report, best showed £d per lb decline on previous rates, and others in proportion. The wheat market is firm. Wellington, July 21. The Luna, with the Governor and suite, left for Nelson at 11.30 this morning. Dunedin, July 21.“
The Press is jubilant over the act that the City of New York came in without touching and that the Taupo was made fast for the first time alongside the Dunedin wharf. During the passage of the mail boat from Lyttelton, and when about eleven miles due east of Godley Head, and about two and a half miles off shore, the sea was very much discolored. Captain Caverly had some of the water drawn up, and upon examination it was found to be full of earthy matter, and after standing awhile deposited a muddy sediment, supposed to be the result of the earthquake.
