BOROUGH COUNCIL.

LYTTELTON. Monday, June 26. Present—Cr H. Allwright (in the chair), W. Holmes, W, Graham, H. Hawkins, and McDonald, The clerk stated that he had received £29 14b during the past week. Correspondence was read— From the Secretary for Public Works, asking the Council to take over the road from the Orphanage to Governor’s Bay, as it had been completed. From the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, asking the Council to appoint a sub-committee to meet a sub-committee of the Chamber of Commerce on the subject of the appointment of a Harbor Board, From Miles, Haasal and Co, drawing attention to a large pool of water which collects in wet weather in front of their store. From Wm. Reed and others, ratepayers, of Yoelas road, stating that the road was almost impassable in wet weather, and requesting the Council to either metal the road or remove earth and clay from gutters and sides which had been thrown on the road. From Rev Canon Dudley, stating that he was not liable for sections 222 and 228, as neither were now in his possession. From Mr J. Hamilton, complaining of the number of cattle trespassing on Jackson’s road. With regard to the letter from the Secretary for Public Works, in reference to the Council taking over the new road to Governor’s Bay, Crs Holmes and W. Graham pointed out that it would cost a considerable sum to keep the road in question in repair. After further discussion, during which Crs Hawkins and McDonald stated they thought the road was a great benefit to the town, it was resolved that the clerk be instructed to acknowledge the letter, asking the Government to allow any necessary repairs to the road in question to be done by the prisoners. It was resolved that the appointment of the sub-committee, to confer with the Chamber of 'Commerce in reference to the appointment of a Harbor Board, be deferred for a week. Messrs Miles, Hassal and Co’s letter was next considered, and it was resolved to refer the matter to the railway engineer, as the land belonged to ;thc Government, the clerk in the meantime to acknowledge the letter. With reference to Mr Dudley’s letter, it was resolved that the solicitor be instructed not to apply for the rates. • Respecting the petition from inhabitants of Yoclas road, it was determined to call at once for tenders for supplying metal on the road. It was determined that Mr Hamilton’s letter be forwarded to Sergeant-Major O’Grady for his information. The report of the foreman of works was then read. It recommended the immediate metalling of Yoelaa road, the Bridle path, and St David street, from Sumner road to Mr Malcolmson’s corner, and the repair of the footpath in London street, between Dublin and Winchester street. The report also stated that people in different parts of the town were in the habit of depositing rubbish on spare sections, and emptying night soil down street gratings, practices which required immediate checking. Resolved—“ That tenders be called for the metal required for repairs on Bridle path and St David street, tenders to be sent in by Monday night next,” The repairing of Dublin street was left in the hands of the foreman of works. A report of the committee appointed to inspect the drainage was read. The committee found on inspection that the greater part of the surface drainage had been diverted from its natural course, and conducted through Malcolmson’s property by a ditch cut on the hill side. The committee recommended that the southern ditch be properly cleaned out, and the water conducted by 12in earthen pipes into the Cemetery road, and thence to the drain in St David street. The report was adopted. Cr Hawkins called attention to the bad state of the buildings on the land leased by the Council to Mr Illingworth. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £l4 19b. Cr Holmes called attention to the dangerous step at the end of the footpath in Dublin street, and the foreman of works having been requested to attend to the matter, the Council adjourned.
