AMUSEMENTS.
LYDIA HOWARDS TROUPE. “ Kenilworth,” on its first representation last evening at the Canterbury Music Hall, attracted an audience which filled the building in all its parts, and the style in which it was produced, amply justified the hearty and honest enthusiasm with which it was received. Miss Howarde, up to the last moment, had hoped to be well enough to take her part as the Earl of Leicester, but her neuralgic enemy compelled the management to substitute Mr Towle in her place. We can honestly compliment that gentleman on the correct rendering of the part entrusted to him at such short notice, and if he will pardon the suggestion, we think an improvement in his “ make-up ” might be made by the adoption of a less modern style in the fashion of his pedal encasiugs. We commend to the consideration of the management the advisability of reducing the volume of noise made by the gentleman who discourses on the ‘ ‘ big-fiddle ” in the orchestra, as at times last evening some of the best hits in the burlesque were quite lost to those of the audience, who, from the crowded state of the house, were unfortunately compelled to remain in his vicinity. The piece will be repeated this evening, and deserves another full house.
