NEWS OF THE DAY.

Electro-Biology.—Captain G IT. Wilson will explain the science of ElectroBiology by experiments, this evening, at the Oddfellows’ Hall.

Football. —The match on Saturday will be an alphabetical one, the sides being A to L vMto Z The former will wear red and black and the latter blue and white. Normal School. —This school will break up for mid-winter holidays to-morrow, and re-assemble on Monday, the 10th July, at nine a.m.

Friendly Societies Bill.—A meeting of the delegates of the 1.0.0. F., M.U , and A.0.F., to consider the proposed Friendly Societies Bill, will be held this evening at the Foresters’ Hall. New Theatre.—The contractor for the erection of the new theatre commenced operations yesterday morning, and the building will be pushed forward as vigorously as possible, in order to be ready about September next.

Arrest.—On Tuesday evening Edward Janverin Norton Taylor, formerly a member of the constabulary force, was arrested at Saltwater Creek by Constable Haldane on a charge of uttering a valueless cheque. He was brought up at Kaiapoi Magistrates’ Court yesterday, and remanded.

Accident—Oxford Bush,—On Tuesday last, a man named Gustave Theim, while felling a tree in King and Machalich’s bush, accidentally came in the way of its fall, and was severely injured. He was removed to the Christchurch Hospital.

Masonic. —The installation of Bro Sir Donald McLean as Grand Master of the Freemasons for the North Island, under the English Constitution, takes place at Wellington on Saturday. The R.W. Dist. G.M., Bro W. Donald, the Deputy Dist. G.M. Bro H. Thomson, and a number of the craft, together with several brethren from Dunedin, proceed by the Taupo to-day to.be present at the ceremony. Registrar’s Returns.— The following are the returns for the city of Christchurch and district for the month of May Births : City of Christchurch : Males, 21 ; females, 21 ; total, 45 ; Christchurch district: Males, 60 ; females, 50 ; total, 110. Marriages— City of Christchurch, 42 ; Christchurch district, 10. Deaths—City of Christchurch : Males, 8; females, 11; total, 19; Christchurch district; Males, 17 ; females, 13 ; total, 30.

Christchurch Hospital.— The following is a return of the patients treated during May Under treatment at date of last returns ; Males, 70 ; females, 23 ; total, 93 , admitted during the month: Males, 40; females, 14 ; total, 54, Discharged during month—Cured : Males. 37 ; females, 17 ; relieved: males, 6 ; females, 3 ; died : males, 11 ; females, 2. Remaining under treatment : Males, 56 ; females, 15. Music Hall Company. —The adjourned meeting of this company was held yesterday afternoon at 3 pm. Mr H. H. Deßourbel occupied the chair. Mr H. Thomson moved “ That the company be wound up voluntarily, and that a liquidator be appointed.” Mr Beatty seconded the motion, which was agreed to, Mr F. Hobbs moved “ That Mr W. H, Hargreaves be appointed liquidator.” Mr F. A. Bishop seconded the motion, which was carried. The meeting then adjourned for five weeks.

Accident. —A serious accident happened on Wednesday evening to a man named William Ballautyne, employed at Messrs Ward and Co’s Brewery, and residing in St Asaph street. It appears he was riding home with "a Mr Sutherland, baker, and on turning sharply into St Asaph street, the wheel of the cart caught the footpath, the result being an upset. Ballantyne was thrown out, and the top rail of the cart fell on his leg, breaking it just above the ankle. He was attended by Dr Nedwell, who set the leg, and the sufferer is progressing favourably.

Fatal Accidents.— On Tuesday, about five o’clock, several children of Mr Kingston, dairy farmer, Robinson’s Bay, were playing near the smouldering remains of a bush fire, a spark from a stump was blown upon the dress of one of the little ones, two and a half years old. When the child felt his dress on fire, in his fright he ran home, thereby fanning the flame, and causing such severe injuries to the breast and neck that he died during the night. D.t Peard was in attendance soon after the accident took place. The same day a child, thirteen months old, of Mr Henry Mclntosh, Little Akaloa, was scalded 1o death. An inquest was held yesterday, the particulars of which we have not yet received.

Very Sudden Death, — A man, name unknown, dropped down dead about 10 o’clock this morning at Messrs Wilson, King, and Co’s Addington stores, corner of Park road and Selwyn street. Deceased was-put on by the storeman as a casual man, about nine o’clock, to load the waggons during the day, and was engaged on the stack pulling a sack to the edge, for a second man to carry, when he fell down, groaned for a second, and expired. Dr Prins, who was sent for, soon arrived, and pronounced the man to he dead. Deceased had never worked in the store before, and was a stranger to the firm and employes. He was to all appearance about forty years of age, sft lOin in height, stout and robust looking, light hair, moustache and beard, the latter of medium length, and was dressed in a grey suit of tweed. In one of his coat pockets there were found some sandwiches wrapped in a piece of newspaper, but there was no letter or article about him which would positively fix Jffs identity.
