WEST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The committee met on Wednesday evening at the usual hour. Present—Messrs Booth, Nairn, Dtmford, Bowie, Bell, and Bickerton. In the absence of the chairman, through indisposition, Mr Booth was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the visiting committee reported on various matters requiring attention in connection with the district Khool. On their recommendation it waß decided to ask the Minister for Education for authority to have a new fire place and chimney built in the large room ; also, to baild a coal and wood shed in rear of the school; and to have part of the verandah covered in and fitted up as a lavatory for the Srli' school. A letter was read from the inister for Education, giving a statement of the arrangement entered into between the late Board of Education and the West Christcburch school committee as to the amount of rates leviable on the district on account of the Normal School buildings, and giving the following reasons as an answer to the objection that the East Cbristchurch district had not contributed anything towards the cost of these buildings :—l. That the committee, by an expenditure of £BOOO, one-sixth of which was contributed by the district, have provided accommodation for nearly 600 children, and that the Government have provided accommodation at the Normal School for at least a similar number, and has charged the district with one-sixth of £4OOO. 2. That the committee, by letter of 23rd August, Btated that when the temporary school at Durham street was closed, school accommodation would be required in the district for 800 children in addition to that already provided in the Linooln road school; but he had not yet been advised that any further accommodation was required in the northern portion of the district beyond that provided by the Normal School. 3. That it was always understood that the Normal School would be under the direct control of the Government and not of the district committee. Another letter was read, sanctioning the appointments of Mr O. J. Hoggan and Mr Chaser as third asaster and assistant master respectively. A letter was read from the rate collector for the district, stating that the amount he had received for the household rate for the current year was £65, and for school fees £l3O 10s. With reference to the Minister for Education's letter, it was decided to relegate the whole matter to a sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs Bowie, Dunford, and Nairn, with instructions to make enquiry as to the committee's position in regard to the northern portion of the district, and report at next meeting. Miss Jack and Miss M. Kruse were appointed pupil teachers at the district school. The secretary was directed to advertise for tenders for coals for twelve months. Messrs Booth and Bickerton were reappointed visiting committee for the next month. After transacting some other business, the committee adjonrned.
