"Very few transactions in grain direct with farmers have taken place during the week, business being now chiefly confined to second-hand sales amongst traders. Wheat is quiet, and although we have heard of no actual decline on last week’s quotations, yet sales are much more difficult to effect, as the exporters have almost stopped buying, and it is not probable that a large line would fetch anything like the price millers are paying for small lots. Oats are dull of sale at is 8d to Is 9d, and some traders have for the present ceased to purchase for want of storeroom, stocks still accumulating without any appearance Of improved outside demand. For good malting barley there is a fair Inquiry, ordinary and inferior samples are almost quite unsaleable. Millers’ quotations for flour are unsettled, as one advertises XlO 10s, whilst some others ask fill; exports during the week have been light, owing to the increased demand for oatmeal for winter use; manufacturers have advanced prices of oatmeal fil per ton; dairy produce continues to fetch good prices, prime butter being to-day quoted at Is Id, cheese at Bjd. Business has been fairly brisk in the import markets during the week. In spirits we have to report a better demand, as compared with last week’s transactions. Islay whisky has been in good request at 8s 3d to 5s 6d; Dunville’s, 6s to 6s 3d; West India rum has been quitted at 4s for 10 o.p; Hennessy’s and Martell’s pale and dark brandy is placed in parcels at 7s 9d to Bs ? i.b; incase goods we have forced sales of LL. whisky to report at low rates, and Wolfe’s schnapps at 22s 6d i.b. for pts and qts; the business done in. the latter has been very great; the trade sales in schnapps have been very good at satisfactory rates. Bottled ales and stouts—The former has been offered freely, at rates which leave a considerable loss to those interested. Stouts— The demand for this line has been much better during the past week ; sales have been effected in Blood, Wolfe’s, and other good brands at lls to 11s 6d. In tea we have several trade sales to report at satisfactory rates. Sugars-Finer sorts, such as white crystals and counters, are held for an advance, as the stocks held at present are rather limited; the ordinary trade sales have been made at full rates. Candles (Price’s) are sold freely at 10jd. Kerosene is getting much firmer; it is worth is e£d i.b. in the Dunedin market, holders here are asking 2s 3d, d.p, for best brands; stocks held and coming forward are barely sufficient to carry us on through the winter, and we expect to see prices far higher than the above quotation before the winter is lar advanced. Tobaccos have been moving off freely .at fair prices. Cornsacks— Several lots have been quitted at rates from iCs 3d to 10s 9d, according to make. Seaming twine—A few bales of three ply have been quitted at 13s Od to 14s per bundle of 121bs. Cement—The market at present is glutted; importers are offering freely at 19s d.p.; stock? held and shipments on the way are excessive.'' 'According to circulars to hand, the quantity advised as shipped was 5200 casks; the Desdemona bringing alone 3050 casks. Several sales have been booked at 19s delivered. Fencing wire—A feW consignments have been pushed off at low rates. Galvanized iron—This article still keeps law; ,pre Jtave.ro improvement on lest week’s prices TO record'.
