MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, May 9. (Before G. L, Mellish, Esq, R M.) pTis Worship took his seat upon the Bench at twenty-five minutes to twelve. Drunk and Disorderly.— John Wilson was charged with being-drunk and disorderly and with assaulting the apprehending constable, He was fined 20s. Mary Ann Greaves for being drunk and soliciting prostitution was fined a similar amount.
Assault. — John Saunders was charged with violently assaulting Mrs Robson, of Robson’s oyster saloon, Colombo street. Inspector Buckley produced a medical certifi cate, stating that the prosecutrix was unable to be present, Evidence was given that a dispute occurred between Mrs Robson and prisoner, who took her and dashed her head against the footpath. Prisoner was remanded until to-monow (Wednesday). Bail being taken for his appearance. Deserted Child. David White was charged with neglecting to support his child. Prisoner denied that the child was his. He said it was born before he married his wife, who was now dead. She was divorced from another man, and had before he married her been generally sweethearting. Ordered to pay 10s a week. Wife Desertion,- Peter Timbey was charged with deserting bis wife. He did not answer to his name when called upon. Mr Jamieson said they had tried to obtain a settlement but could not do so. He (Mr Jamieson) was now taking proceedings in the Supreme Court, with a view to the recovery of the child. Defendant was ordered to pay 10s a week towards the support of his wife.
LYTTELTON. Monday, May 8. (Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M.) Drunkenness,— Richard Muschamp, arrested by Constable Baly, charged with the above offence, was dismissed with a caution. Larceny.— John Crowley was charged upon the information of Andrew Orgin, with the above. Detective Gatward stated that at half-past nine on Saturday night complainant reported the loss of some clothes, and stated that he suspected accused, who was a seaman on board the same ship as he (complainant), and had left during the evening. Upon going on board another vessel in harbor, the detective found the prisoner, and also some clothes, which were identified by complainant as his. The complainant also gave evidence as to the identity of the goods, and the bench sentenced prisoner to two months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
