The barque Madeline, 106 days out from London, arrived at Napier on the isth. The schooner Agnes Donald was to leave Gisborne last Saturday lor Lyttelton. She loads produce at this port for Poverty Hay. The tine schooner Onward having delivered her cargo of railway iron at Oainaru. is now loading with produce for Auckland at that port. The mail steamer Colima is meeting with quick despatch at the hands of the artisans engaged on her repaii s. The whole of her decks are being rccaulkcd, and sides painted; while bflow the water line she is being coated with Peacock’s antifouliug composition. The work of getting the hub or boi-s of herlpri.pelter into position was commenced yesterday under the personal supervision of Mr Persy tli, her chief engineer, and that gentleman with his crew were at work during the whole of last night, in order to complete their ta.-k with the least possible delay. A deep sea sounding machine is being made at Mills’ foundry, Wellington, to the order oi Dr Lemon, who purposes employing it in connection with the laying of the second cable between the North and South Islands. It consists of a drum from which the wire is unwound, and two w'heels for winding in, the drum being constructed so that it may be moved along an iron bed to any position. The apparatus tor indicating the length ot wire out when the sinker touches the bottom is very ingenious. Attached to the main spindle are two small brass wheels, one above the other. The lower is worked by a thread on the spindle, and makes one revolution to 100 revolutions of the drum; and the upper wheel, which is connected with the lower by a small cog-wheel of ten teeth, thus makes one revolution while the drum has made 1000, and as the drum’s circumference is exactly one fathom, the first revolution of the second brass wheel is an indication that the line has reached ICOO fathoms. But when finished a dialplate will be attached to the machine, with a pointer, which will Indicate the precise amount of line out at any moment.
