PAT AND HIS PIG.

A Yorkshireman having killed a pig, and not wishing to divide with his neighbors, as was the custom, said to his m n (who, bj the way, was a son of the Emerald Isle) : ‘ Pat, if I give the neighbors, who have given to me, a piece of my perk, I’ll have none for myself. Can you tell me what I am to do?’ ‘ Bedad, sir,’ said Pat, ‘it’s myself that can do the same thiog.’ ‘ Good,’ says the Yorkshireman, rubbing his hands, and looking at Pat. 1 Now,' tell me what I am to do?’ ‘Faith, sir,’ said Pat, ‘sure and when the crathur is cleaned, just be after hanging it against the door, where every mother’s son of th r m will see it, and early in the morning before any one is about, get up and .take your pig in and hide it away. Thin when your neighbours come, just be after telling them that

the pig was sthole.’ ‘Capital idea, Pat!’ exclaimed the Yorkshireman, ‘ I’ll do it by George.’ So when the pig was cleaneit was hang up out side, so that the neighbours might see it. The countryman anxiously awaited the approaching night, crept round the house and stole the pig. What was the astonishment of the Yorkshireman, when at dawn he arose to hide away his pig, but found no pig there, can be better imagined than described. Pat came in with his ‘ top of the raorniu’ to ye’ sir,’ and giving him a knowing wink, said:—‘ Master, how about the pig?’ ‘ Well, Pat, the pig was stolen in reality.’ ‘Faith, and that sounds as naturally as if you had lost your pig,’with another knowing wink. ‘ But, you blockhead, I tell you the pig was stolen,’ ‘Faith, and be gorra, <he sorra bit o’ me thought you could act so well. Just stick to that; it’s as natural as life.’ ‘By George,’ roared the now irate Yorkshireman, ‘I tell you the pig was stolen.’ ‘ Och ! be jabers,’ said Pat, 'stick to it, yer nabors will behave you, and sorra bit of it they’ll got. Faith, I didn’t think you could do it so well.
