Wc may quote fair hacks and light harness horses from £lti to £22; inferior, almost unsaleable. Melbourne.—Tin* “ Argus ” of the oth instant report-: —ln the import markets business continues tom detain an appearance of considerable heaviness. There is little inquiry of a general character, and the sales effected—with the exception of sugar, which was disposed of publicly to some extentare unimportant. Breadstuff's arc firm, bui owing to the small quantities placed cn the market for. sale, transactions even at auction are of very little account indeed. Flour is moving off privately at. £l2. At the public sale this forenoon, however, there was nothing ataT offered. Wheat is wanted, but while wc have little to report as having been done privately, we can refer to only 250 bags having been disposed of at auction, when 5s (id to 5s 7d was realised tor milling qualities, and 6s sd was paid lor a fine sample for seed. The following, relating to the state and condition of the London market, is taken from the “Mark Lane Express” of 2- tli February The grain trade tor the week has been dull and uninteresting; imports have been moderate, although it is doubtful whether the stocks ou hand are as large as have been imagined. The warehouses are probably fairly filled, notwithstanding the steady depletion which has been iu progress since the end ot 1875. We are now approaching a period of critical importance regarding supplies. The large fleet from south-eastern Europe, which has recently been an incubus on trade, has been almost cleared up, and the stoppage of shipments from ice-bound ports must greatly reduce supyilies. Add to this the diminution of farmers’ stocks, and we can reasonably con - clude that the plethora will shortly be over. A feature of the grain trade now is, that our near continental neighbours are not so well supplied, and a relaxation of rates here would lead to an enquiry from there. Altogether, the trade seem; healthy, subject only to contingencies of more than usually open weather and increased supplies, which now seem improbable.’’ Oafs show no change. Under the hammer, 230 bags were disposed of at prices ranging according to quality, from 2s lOd to 3s 3d and up fo 3s 4td. Feeding barley has been sold at 3s 4d fo 3s od. Maize, tine new, is selling at 4s 6d in ordinary routine sales. Fijigrown was sold at 4s 4d. A good deal of interest was evinced in the result of the sugar sales this forenoon, and from the fact that the market had been so completely cleared of Mauritius, fine grocery descriptions attracted a large attendance of the trade, and as extreme a price was realised for fine whites as could be got, considering that Victorian refined is not more than £36. The cargo offered comprised 8880 bags, of which 4810 bags were allowed by the auctioneers to go. Low to good grainy yellows realised from 20s 6d to 3ls 3d ; finest yellow counters brought 32s to 32s 6d. medium yellow crystals were, placed at 30s 6d, and good to tine counters sold at 35s to 35s 6d. Of the balance, which was withdrawn, sales are making privately. Teas are moving off steadily, some 500 half-chests congous were iii one instance placed at up to Is 9d, and smaller parcels have also been gut rid of. Keioscne oil has been quiet for some time past, but wc learn of parcels being now under negotiation.
