NEW FIRE BRIGADE STATION.
The Mayor, accompanied by Or Jones and Superintendent Harris, waited on the Provincial Government and Insurance Companies according to arrangement, for the purpose of obtaining subscriptions to the building, and we are glad to Bay that through the liberal way in which they were met the Council will be in a position to commence the bnildiDg at once. The Insurance Companies promised £SOO towards the object, and the Provincial Government promised to put £SOO on the estimates. In consequence of these promises the City Council has accepted the tender of Mr Jas Goas, and the work will be proceeded with forthwith /
The building, when finished, will contain ten single mens' rooms, and accommodation for three families, so that in the event of a fire there will be sufficient aid on the spot to attend at once to matters, thus preventing the unavoidable delay that has arisen at times of fires from the want of this accommodation.
The building will be a substantial structure and a credit to Christchurch, and will supply a want that has been much felt by the fire brigade. We congratulate the brigade and public on the successful termination to the endeavours of all concerned in obtaining the means to erect a building which will not only be an ornament to the oity, but will be one of the most useful institutions we have. We understand that the cost of erection will be about £2OOO.
