INTERPROVINCIAL.
Auckland, April 5. Mr O’Brien, chief warder, has been appointed governor of the gaol, vice the late Captain Eyre, who was buried to-day. There is an uneasy feeling in Auckland about the attitude of Kir George Grey and Sir J. Vogel. Sir G. Grey is moving to get the whole of the late correspondence in reference to public;,money being expended, privately referred to the Secretary of State. Arrived—Edith, from the Society Islands, with a rich cargo of pearl shell, valued at £2500, for a three months’ trip. Samples of coal from Wangarie and Mercer have received very favorable opinions. The seams in both places have now been well worked into, and the quality has considerably improved. The Harbor Board has determined not to lengthen the now railway pier, but will obtain the requisite depth of water by dredging. Himiona Te Rua pleaded " Not Guilty” to wilful murder, pleading justification, on the ground of being the victim of witchcraft. The evidence was conclusive, and the jury returned a verdict of “ Guilty,” with a recommendation to mercy. The Judge passed sentence of death, but it is understood there is little probability of the sentence being carried into effect. Wellington, April 5. Smat, the perpetrator of the Hutt outrage, was put on his trial to-day, and charged with attempting to murder Henry Young by assaulting him with an axe. He was defended by counsel, but on being found guilty on the first charge, he pleaded guilty to the others. The jury were locked up for an hour before coming to a decision. Sentence deferred until to-morrow. Wellington, April 6. Smat, the perpetrator of the Hutt atrocities, was sentenced this morning to twenty years’ imprisonment on each of the two charges, the sentences to be concurrent. Dunedin, April 5. The names of Messrs Strode, Pyke, and McGlashan are mentioned in connection with the office of Chief Commissioner of the Waste Lands Board, which will be rendered vacant by the appointment of Mr J. T. Thompson as Surveyor-Genera l , Mr Thompson left for the North by the steamer to-day. Invercargill, April 6. An examination of the hatching boxes by the Curator showed that two-thirds of the ova packed by Mr Youl are worthless, and all those packed by Mr Buckland are doing well. The Curator is of opinion that six boxes of the Buckland ova will giv< a greater yield than the hundred boxes packed by Mr Youl. Mr Buckland’s boxes contained 1200 ova, Mr Youl’s 600 ova each.
