At 7.30 p.m. last night the s.s. Akaroa started for the disabled mail steamer. Sighted her at 11.30 p.m. off Akaroa, and on arrival alongside found the Alhambra, s. s., had her in tow, and was steering for this port, where she arrived at daylight this morning. YESTERDAYS. The Coq du Village sailed from Adelaide for New Zealand on March 23rd. The Inverdruie, barque, was spoken by the ship Hampshire, that arrived in Melbourne on March 26th. It was on February 17th, inlatitude43.ll S., longitude 12.9 E., that the vessels were in company. The Fawn, brig, left Newcastle on 23rd March for Lyttelton. The Jessie Osborne will take inside berth at the Gladstone Pier to-day, the Soukar shifting outside. The Alhambra sailed at 3.30 p.m., and the Arawata at 4.15 p.m. The Wanganui sailed at noon, and the Phoebe at 3.15 p.m. The barque Pet, Captain Westbrook, entered out at Hobart Town on March 20th for Lyttelton. The barque Italy, from Newcastle, arrived the same day. The brigantine Augusta, Captain Pullman, arrived In harbor yesterday afternoon from Hokitika, timber laden. She left that port on the 26th ult, and experienced similar weather as the Alert. The schooners Elizabeth and Kate sailed yesterday for their destinations. The fore-and-aft schooner Arthur Wakefield arrived in harbor early yesterday morning from Havelock. She brings a cargo of timber consigned to order. The favorite steamer Maori arrived in harbor at 2.15 p.m yesterday; left Port Chalmers at 6 p.m on the 3rd,.and had light and variable southerly winds with heavy swell to arrival at 7.30 am; sighted the mail steamer Colima about 20 miles ahead ; at 10 a.m Colima signalled the Maori, and on arrival itlQßviita tb« captain and JPHgt Kioto boarded them,
and from them they heard that at 3.20 a.ra the propeller became disconnected ’from the shaft; the accident occurred 10 miles oil the Long Look Out. The pilot came on to Lyttelton per Maori to make arrangements for towing the vessel into harbor, and also to arrange about getting the mails taken to Fiji, as it is impossible for the Colima to be ready in time to proceed with them. The Maori sailed last night. The barque Joliba, Captain Scouller, left Newcastle on the 18th witli a light E. wind and heavy sea. Two days after experienced noriherly gale, after which there was a strong blow from the south. Cape Farewell was sighted on Tuesday, 4th, and thence had variable winds and calms to arrival at 3.30. p.m. yesterday. The fine schooner Alert, Captain Hays, arrivedin harbour on Monday evening at 8 o’clock. She left Hokitika on March 26th; experienced light variable winds ; passed Cape Farewell on the 30th ; then light N.E. winds ; passed Cape Campbell on Saturday last; then light baffling winds and fine weather, arriving as above. The line North German three-masted schooner Sophie, Captain Brumshergen, arrived yesterday afternoon from Dunedin. Site came from Mauritius to Port Chalmers, and has part cargo of sugar tor this port. Reports leaving Port Chalmers on Friday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, and experienced N.E. winds and calms to arrival. Her cargo is consigned to Wood, Shand, and Co. Messrs M'Mcckau and Blackwood’s steamer Arawata, Captain Underwood, left Sandrldge at 4.30 p.m. on the 27th ultimo, cleared Port Phillip Heads at 7 p.m., and passed Wilson’s Promontory at 4 a.m. next day, and the steamer Kiugarooma, bound in, at the same lime. Fresh N.E. winds and fine weather prevailed across, and at 7 a.m. on the Ist instant she arrived at the Bluff, having made the run in four days ten hours. Discharged 70 tons of cargo, and left at 5 p.m., came along under easy steam, ard arrived at Port Chalmers at 7 a.m. on the 2nd ; left at 5 p.m. on the 3rd, arriving in harbor at 9.45 a.m. yesterday. She experienced thick easterly weather on the coast. We thank Mr Miller, the purser, for the report and delivery of our Melbourne exchanges. At 10 p.m. on Friday la-t the Arawata passed and spoke the whaling barque Chance, to the westward of the Solander. Master reported that there were plenty of whales about, but that the barque had had no luck.
