DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB RACES; Second Day(From « correspondent of the Press.} Dunedin, March 24. The morning promised fine weather, but about noon the sky became overcast, and rain and squalls were intermittent throughout the early part of the day. There were nevertheless about 4COO people on the ground, and the stand was fairly patronised. The following are the results of the day’s racing : Handicap Hurdle Race, of 80 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 2 sovs each ; the second horse to receive the amount accruing from the sweep ; nominations, 3 sovs; two miles and a distance, over ten flights of hurdles, 3ft 6in high. Mr R. Fraser’s ch g Banjo, aged, 9st 51bs (W. Smith) 1 Mr Thos. Forster’s b g Coquette, aged, Bst 71bs ... ... ... (T. Cotton) 2 Mr D. O’Brien’s br m Auckland Kate, aged, lOst (W. Enderson) 3 Mr W. Davies’ Theodore, aged, list .Joyce) 0 Mr H. Gourlay’s ch g Kildare, aged, 10st 21bs (J. Cotton) 0 Tommy Dodd was scratched at twelve o’clock. Banjo received 3£lb over, Coquette 151 b. This race was a great upset, the favorites being nowhere, and two outsiders running first and second. Kildare has at last broken his run of good luck. The betting was 2 to 1 agst Kildare and Kate, 3 to 1 agst Theodore, 4 to 1 agst Coquette, 6 to 1 Banjo. A capital start was effected, and over the first hurdle the order was—Kildare first, Theodore and Kate next, Banjo and Coquette last. Theodore stumbled over it, but Joyce recovered him splendidly. Coquette ran up alongside Kildare, but at the next hurdle the latter fell, Cotton remounting him quickly, and going after his horses. On the opposite side Banjo took the lead, Coquette lying next, Kate third, now some lengths behind, Theodore fourth, Kildare rapidly making up his leeway. Past the stand the second time this order was kept, but Kildare again fell and threw Cotton, who again mounted, but he was out of the race. Round the course Banjo and Coquette ran together, and cleared all the hurdles in grand style, the filly, however, losing ground at the last but one. She came again at the entrance to the straight, but old Banjo was not to be caught, and sailed in a winner by half a dozen lengths, amidst loud cheers, Auckland Kate a poor third, Kildare last. Time, 4min 40 J sec. Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, of 200 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each ; the second horse to receive the amount accruing from the sweepstakes; the third horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes. Betting—Even agst Guy Fawkes, 3 to 2 Pungawerewere, 3 to 1 Right Bower and Ariel, 4 to I Hercules and Tommy Dodd, 8 to 1 Templeton. 10 to 1 Fishhook. There were four false starts, in which Pungawerewere got r away well, and at the last Templeton, as happened in the same race last year, lost some lengths. Punga cut out the running, with Guy Fawkes and Tattler in close attendance, the rest in a cluster, save Tommy Dodd, who, with Templeton, brought up the rear. Passing the stand Pungawerewere and Guy Fawkes still held the lead, Ariel coming up there and pulling double, Tattler fourth, the field close up, with the exception of Templeton, On the opposite side of the course Tommy Dodd separated himself from the ruck and drew gradually to the leaders, but soon fell back beaten. Guy Fawkes now collared Pungawerewere, and at the entrance had her settled, but Ariel came with a tremendous rush and passed them both, landing an easy winner, after on exciting race, by four lengths. Guy Fawkes and Punga, though punished severely, could not race the winner, in fact, shutting up like a cur as soon as Guy got at her, but Templeton came through his horses wonderfully at the finish and made a good third, his stable companion fourth, the rest straggling. Time, 3min 20-Jsecs. It is curious that yesterday Guy Fawkes carried in the Publicans’ Handicap Bst 121bs to Ariel’s 6st 121 bs, and beating the colt rather easily. The Ladies’ Purse, of 60 sovs; entrance, 3 sovs ; one mile and a half. Welter weight for age. Gentlemen riders, Mr H. Redwood’s blk h Guy Fawkes, 5 yrs, list (Mr C. Turnbull) 1 Mr J, P. Betting—2 to 1 on Guy Fawkes ; 3 to 1 against Tommy Dodd ; 5 to 1 against Merrybird.J All got off at the first attempt, Merrybird making the running for half a mile, when Guy Fawkes being let out passed her as though she were standing still, and took the lead, Tommy Dodd lying behind. Opposite the stand Merrybird again went up to Guy Fawkes, but coming up the straight the latter shook herself, and came in the easiest of winners by six lengths, Tommy Dodd passed Merrybird at the distance post, and beat her for second place by four lengths. Time, 3min fsec. Novel kace, a handicap of 100 sovs. Nomination, 2 sots ; one mile and a half. Betting—Even on Wee Lad, 2 to 1 agst Nelly King, 4 to 1 agst anything else. A shocking bad start was made, the six horses being all in single file, Nelly King last of all. Past the stand Wild Manx Boy led, Steamer on the inside almost on terms with him, Mischief and Haphazard close up, Wee Lad next, Nelly King still last. Going round the opposite side Wee Lad drew gradually ahead, and at a mile Haphazard followed suit, the two getting Wild Manx Boy into difficulties. At the entrance into the straight running there now ensued the best race of the meeting, for Smith and Kennedy had to out with whips and rode their horses desperately, but Wee Lad was game to the last, and kept his nose in front all the way up the straight, winning by a short head, Wildman’s Boy a good third, the Steamer and Mischief, Nelly King last. Time, 2min 53£sec. The winner was knocked down to his owner for £SO. Hack kace of 20 -sovs, open to all horses ; post entry, 1 soy; one mile ; catch weights ; winner to be sold by auction for 15 sovs, aud any surplus to go to the funds. The horses went away to an indifferent start, Strop and Imperial being all behind. Melbourne led for a short distance, when Haricot dashed to the front, Waxy, Melbourne, and Emulation following in that order. Imperial and Richmond were running behind. Haricot came into the straight running six lengths in front, Waxy, Melbourne, Loquacity, Oleolite, Strop, and Richmond coming after in that order, the others all well up. At the stand Haricot was leading by fully fifteen lengths. Waxy, Melbourne, Emulation, and Feu d’Artifice were leading the ruck. After rounding the turn Haricot was leading by eight lengths, Melbourne, Emulation, Richmond, Feu d’Artifice, and Imperial were following in that order in a cluster. After a gap came Oleolite and Strop, at the head of the ruck. Goshawk was acting as whipperin. At the railway bridge Haricot was still leading, Melbourne and Waxy were following together, and were here passed by Feu d’Artifice. Rounding the far turn Feu d’Artifice was gaining on Haricot, the pair being well out in front. Then followed Richmond, Imperial, Emulation, aud Melbourne, each running about a length apart. At the abattoirs Haricot was still four lengths in front, Feu d’Artifice was second, Richmond and Imperial being close upon her. After a good gap came Melbourne, Emulation, and Oleolite. Richmond led into the straight running, Feu d’Artifice being close upon the inside, and Imperial on the outside. All the way up the straight Richmond had the race easy, and won by fully six lengths.
