SAD ACCIDENT AT SEA.

™Tbe last mail brings the account of the following sad accident :—The whole of the East Nenk of Fife has been cast into a state of mourning and gloom by the occurrence of a catastrophe of a magnitude unprecedented in the history of that part of the country. This is the loss of five fishing boats belonging to St Moncucc aud Cellardyke, with their entire crews, to the number of thirty - seven. The boats were overtaken by a storm immediately after leaving Lowestoft and Yarmouth, and some of them have since been cast up on the coast of Norfolk. One of them was picked up at sea, waterlogged, and towed by a steamer to Lynn, where a horrible discovery was made. The mast had fallen across the cabin door, imprisoning the five inmates of the cabin, whoso bodies were found inside. A lingering death must have been theirs. Altogether by this calamity, nineteen women have been left widows, and seventy.two children fatherless, while a number of aged persons have been deprived of those on whom they were depended for support. One woman has lost no less than nine relatives—her husband, son, two brothers, three nephews, a cousin, and a brother-in-law. Another woman, seventy years of age, has lost seven relatives. This aggravation of what, under any circumstances, would have been a sad disaster, is caused by the system of intermarriage which prevails in the small fishing communities. Funds for the relief of the sufferers are being collected throughout the east of Scotland, and up to the present moment £3600 has been received.
