CANTERBURY COLLEGE
A meeting of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College was held yesterday, at 3.30 p.m. Present—Mr Wm. Montgomery (chairman), Hons John Hall and ffi. W. Stafford, Yen Archdeacon Yv’illock, Rev G. Fraser, Dr Turnbull, Messrs Tarcred, Veel, Mellish, Enys, Potts, J. N. Tossvvill, W. J. W. Hamilton, J. Inglis. The chairman said in,"accordance with instructions from the Board, he bad made arrangements with Rev G. Turrell to lecture on Modern Languages during the present terra on the same footing as formerly. Dr Foster had been communicated with, and had accepted the appointment of lecturer on Jurisprudence, and had forwarded a letter of acceptance, stating the days and hours upon which the lectures would be delivered. A letter was read from Professor Bickerton, forwarding a list of fittings necessary for the laboratory and lecture theatre, which it would be as well to get from England as soon s possible. A letter was read from Professor Brown, chairman of the Professorial committee, forwarding the list of students of the Canterbury College who had matriculated at the March examination of the New Zealand University. The names of the students have already been published. The report of the building committee was read as follows;—“The committee reports that Mr Kerr, whose tender for the erection of the laboratory was lowest, would not sign the contract without he obtained the contract for both buildings ; and the architect having reported to the committee that he could not hold out any hopes of being able to obtain within a short time any offer to erect the buildings for the amount at the disposal of the Board, and he having repeated that he had carefully gone over the quantities and estimated the cost of material and workmanship, and was still of the opinion that the buildings could bo erected for the amount, the committee thought it expedient to call for tenders for materials for the foundations, and go on with that portion of the work. The committee therefore asks the Board to sanction the work being carried out in the manner proposed.”
The chairman said that under these circumstances he had waited on the Government and laid the matter before them, and had received a memorandum from the Government on the subject, sanctioning the expenditure in accordance with the estimate of cost submitted, which was now before the Board. The committee now therefore ashed the sanction of the Board to the work being carried out in the manner proposed by them The Board then proceeded to ballot for a governor in the room of Mr R. Wilkin, resigned. Mr R. J. S. Harman was the only candidate, and on the ballot ho was declared duly elected. The letter of Professor Bickerton respecting the fittings for the lecture theatre and laboratory was considered. Rev C. Fraser moved —“That the letter be referred to the building committee to consider the expense and report to the Board upon the same.” Mr Buys seconded the resolution y/ro forma.
On the suggestion of Dr Turnbull, the Rev 0. Fraser agreed to medify his resolution a follows :—“That Professorßickerion’s lettchi referred to the building committee, t.>
ascertain the cost of the fittings aud to proceed with them as far as the funds at the disposal of the College for this purpose will allow.” This resolution was agreed to. Dr Turnbull moved, “ That the Board authorise the building committee to proceed with the foundationsof the College buildings in the manner recommended by the report of the committee as read by the chairman,” The lion E, W. Stafford seconded the motion, which was carried. The Hon B. W, Stafford moved—“ That a list of the several reserves vested in the Board of Governors, showing the acreage and locality of each reserve, and, where let, the name of the tenant, and conditions of his lease, be printed and a copy supplied to each number of the Board ; also, a list of other reserves made for College and Museum purposes not yet vested in the College, with similar information to that mentioned in the foregoing part of the resolution.” Mr J. N. Tosswill seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Bays, being about to visit England, resigned his seat ns a go/ernor, and the chaiiman declared a vacancy at the Board of Governors. The Board then adjourned.
