I have to state that the corresp ndence connected with the removal of the people from the Thames, and the proposals related thereto, was conducted in the first instance contrary to the usual custom in the public service, with a private person, without the superintendent having been in any way consulted or referred to by the Government on the subject. I therefore ought not now to advise or interfere in the matter." Wellington, March 15. The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, after a lapse of nine years, was held to-day. In moving the adoption of the report, the chairman took occasion to refer to the block of traffic on the Queen's wharf, and said unless some improvements were made, their commerce would suffer. He had long been of opinion that the management of the harbor should not be in the hands of the City Council, but that a Harbor Board should be appointed to have control not only of the harbor, but of the wharf, lights, &c. It was their policy to make Wellington what it was certain to become, sooner or later, the great receiving and distributing port of the colony, and to that end it was necessary that they should not look so much to a revenue from their wharf and harbor as to the increase of trade which would accrue. He thought that by making Wellington a free, or nearly free, port, this result would be obtained ; and he hoped the Chamber of Commerce would keep that steadily in view. A motion was carried that the Government should be moved to amend the present bankruptcy law. The report was adopted, and Mr Levin re-elected chairman. Wellington, March 16. The s.s.
