ROAD BOARDS.
AKAROA AND WAINUI. At a meeting of the Board held at the Road Board office, Akaroa, on Saturday last, the 11th inst, present—Messrs Duxbury and Keegan, and the chairman, Mr J. T. Roberts, a letter was received from the Secretary for Public Works, in reply to a letter from the chairman, advising the Board that the engineer’s office would be built on the Government reserve, adjacent to the survey office. A letter was received from the district engineer, requesting the Board to reconsider their objections as to the superintendence of works in p ogress under special grants by their officer. It was resolved —“ That having no control over works executed under special grants, the Board would not be justified in allowing the time of their officer to be occupied in their superintendence.” A deputation of ratepayers had an interview with the Board to ascertain whether any communication had been received from the Government relative to a resolution passed at a meeting of ratepayers held in February last, and forwarded by the chairman of the Board, to the effect that this meeting is of opinion that the best route for the road from Akaroa to top of German Bay Hill is that through Mr St. John’s section, and that the work should be carried out immediately. Mr McGregor, as representing the deputation, requested the Board to again urge on the Govern ment the necessity that exists for the immediate prosecution of the work referred to in the resolution, A letter was received from the district engineer in reply to a letter from the Board re Wainui road diversion, stating that he had written to the Government on the subject, but had not yet received instructions to proceed with the work. A letter was received from Mr J. D, Garwood, stating that he had been given to understand that £2OO was allocated to be spent on the roads within the town, but that only £r oo or thereabouts had been expended. The clerk was instructed to reply to Mr Garwood, stating that the sum of £577 15s 4d had been expended within the town since July, 1874, and that £319 15s lOd of that amount had been expended since January, 1875. A letter was received from Mr T. t)icken, relative to compensation for fencing Wainui road diversion through his property. Referred to district engineer. A letter was received from Mr Jas. F. Roberts, relative to obstruction of Flea Bay road by Mr Checkley’s fence. The clerk was instructed to ascertain what steps have been taken by Mr Checkley towards removal of the obstruction complained of by Mr Roberts. Plans and specifications for new bridge in Barry’s Bay Wete laid before the Board, and it was resolved that tenders be invited for its construction in accordance therewith. The clerk was instructed to prepare p’ans and specifications for bridges’in Akaroa. The meeting then adjourned.
