SPRINGS.

The Board met on Tuesday last. Present —Messrs A. P. O’Callaghan (chairman), F. 0. Murray, W. B. Andrew, and Charles Malthus. The surveyor read hia report, which was considered and adopted. Correspondence was read from Mr Jos. Palmer, with reference to works carried out by the Board on the Leeston road, and which he considered would be likely to cause his property to be flooded in times of floods in the Selwyn. The surveyor said he had written to Mr Palmer suggesting a remedy, to which he had agreed, provided the Board sanctioned the work. The Board sanctioned the work being carried out. From the Secretary of Public Works, asking for the names of the chairman and clerk of the Board, and their salaries. The surveyor said he bad forwarded the required information. From the Regis-trar-General and the Provincial Auditor, asking for certain Road Board information, The surveyor reported that the returns had been forwarded. From the Secretary for Public Works, informing the Board that the cleansing of the Halswell River had been let to Moreshead and McCartney, but that they had failed to take up their contract, and that fresh tenders bad been invited. Reports were received through the Public Works office from the Provincial Engineer’s office, relative to the shingle bar contract, and the proposed road diversion through property at the River Selwyn. From the chairman of the Ashley Road Board forwarding resolutions passed by that Board, relative to the proposed formation of shires, and asking that the matter should be fully discussed by the Board. It was resolved the chairman be thanked for the resolutions forwarded ; that this Board considers it premature to take steps in the matter until the proposals of the Government are more clearly defined. A petition was received from Ridden, Campbell, and others, asking to have the road formed between the Springs and Sargeant's roads. Resolved—" That the Board is wUUdi to cwry out the wwk m mu 11 the

Resolved—" That Bruce receive an extension of time until the 14th April for completing the shingle bar contract,” " That Withers receive an extension of time for completing contract on Leeston road, but that he receive no further payment until the work is completed," " That the surveyor have instructions to have certain works carried out, and that he invite tenders for certain works for next Road Board day.” The chairman reported that Mr Miles had agreed to accept £ls for his interest, and £ls for Mr Gould’s title, for the land required for the approach to Gould’s road ford. Resolved —“ That Mr Miles’ offer be accepted, and’that instructions be given for the necessary conveyance.” Accounts amounting to £169 Is 6d were passed and ordered to be paid, and the Board adjourned until the 28th March,
