COMMERCIAL.
Melbourne.—The ‘Argus’ of the 29th ultimo reports:—“ln the import markets a moderate amount of business has been transacted, without any special sales being reported. There is little or no inquiry experienced for large lines, and we have no transactions to refer to beyond supplying ordinary wants. Flour is firm at .£ll 10s. Parcels are not asked for, but there is a moderate demand for actual requirements at our quotation. Wheat is a trifle easier, however; sales have been made at 6s 3d, and there are no buyers at anything over; on the contrary, holders find much difficulty In making Bales, and even though offering' at this figure, not unfrequently fall in finding a purchaser. posed of at 3s 2d, and we hear of a line of 600 bags good heavy feeding having been placed at 3s sd. Maize ia selling in fair parcels at 4s sd; the trade, however, only operate with extreme caution. Sugars are going off steadily, but the only business made public is the auction sale of damaged sugar, ex livening Star and Garmouth. held this forenoon, when 1458 bags were disposed of at prices ranging from £24 10s to £3-1 15s. Mal*s is coming into more notice, and sales are making at prices rising, according to quality, from 10s 9d to 11s 3d. A line of 20 tanks and one of 23 tanks have been disposed of at within our quotations. Sardines are iu considerable request. We learn of a shipment of 200 eases halves and quarters having chain cd hands at ss Gd for the former, and ts 7Jd for flic latter. A parcel of 230 boxes candles has been placed at A shipment of caustic soda lias been sold at full price. Kerosene oil continues to meet with favour; 2500 cases have been disposed of, a small portion being for local use, and flie greater part for export; 2000 cases, ex FI. D. Brookman. have also been got rid of on private terms. Tobaccocs present a very much firmer aspect, owing to the spirited action of Cameron’s agenis, who have gone into the market and taken up from the trade five shipments of Two Seas and Venus tens. The stock at present is smaller than for years past, while no new shipment can arrive before October next. There is also an improved demand tor twist for export. In liquids, we note sales of Bass’s triangle ale at 9s, several parcels have been quitted at this figure.
