The necessity is becoming more evident ior deepening the Kaiapoi river, especially at the wharves. Apart from the large quantity of grain and produce taken from the Kaiapoi and Mandeville districts by railway, a considerable amount has yet to be taken away by vessels on the river. To meet the convenience of loading and procure quick despatch, it is required that immediate steps should be taken to deepen the natural channel. It is proposed to apply for the steam dredge as soon as a favorable opportunity oilers, but in the meantime practical men recommend that by a very simple plan the channel might be improved, and the earth taken out utilised in forming the proposed protective embankments. In this way a small vote for clearing tho river would considerably have lessened the estimated cost of having to cart earth from a distance for the embankments.
