NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.
MEETING OP SENATE. Saturday, March 4. The Senate met at noon, Present—The Vice-Chancellor, Rev J. 0. Andrew. Hon W, Gisborne, Messrs Heale and Rolleston. The report of the committee appointed to consider the case of the undergraduates who were gazetted as having failed to pass the University Examination of May 1875 was brought up, read, and received. On the motion of the Rev J. 0. Andrew, it was resolved—“ That the report be considered at next sitting.” A telegram was received from Dr Stuart to the Rev W. Johnstone, informing him that Mr W. Brown’s diploma was satisfactory. On the motion of the Rev J. 0, Andrew, it. was resolved—“ That Mr W. Brown be admitted to the ad eundem degree of M.A, On the motion of the Rev J. C. Andrew, it was resolved—“ That a committee be appointed to investigate and report for the information of the Senate on the question of the reserve of 20,000 acres in the district of Tauranga, officially promised to be reserved as an endowment for a Colonial University in the Colonial Secretary’s letter of 3rd June, 1871, to the chairman of the Council of the University, and eliminated in the Legislative Council last session from schedule B to the New Zealand University Reserves Act, 1875, on the ground, as was stated, that the land had been devoted to another purpose. The committee to recommend whether any further steps shall be taken by the Senate in this matter. The committee to consist of Hons W. E. Stafford and W. Gisborne, Mr Heale, and the mover.”
On the motion of the Hon Mr Gisborne, it was resolved :—“ 1. That the attention of the Government be respectfully drawn to the provision in the 30th section of the New Zealand University Act, 1874, which provides that the block of land in the province of Taranaki, consisting of 10,000 acres of land taken under the New Zealand Settlements Acts, and referred to in the schedule to the University Endowment Act, shall be defined by proclamation by the Governor as soon as conveniently may be after the passing of that Act, and that the Government be requested to be good enough to inform the Chancellor of the University whether that definition has been made, and if not, when it will probably be made. 2. That the attention of the Government be also drawn to the provision in the third section of the New Zealand University Reserves Act, 1875, which requires blocks of land in the provinces of Auckland, Wellington, and Canterbury, referred to in schedule B to that Act, to be defined by proclamation by the Governor within six months after the passing of that Act, and that the Government be requested to be good enough to inform the Chancellor whether such proclamation has been made. 3. That the 30th section of the New Zealand University Act, 1874, provides that the proceeds of all lands within any province other than Otago, be invested under regulations of the Governor for the promotion of higher education in the respective provinces in which such reserves are situated in such manner as the General Assembly may from time to time determine, and that the Senate would respectfully represent to the Government the importance, in the interests of such higher education, of immediate steps being taken, if not already taken, for such investment.” On the motion of the Hon Mr Gisborne it was resolved—“ That the Tauranga reserve committee be instructed to consider and report the best means which should be taken vest, by Legislative enactment, these reserves in trustees, and to secure the utilisation of these reserves for the object for which they were made.” On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved that the Senate resolve itself into committee at next meeting to consider the matters contained in the report of the Chancellor. The Senate then adjourned.
