At 9.10 p.m. on Friday night two seamen belonging to the schooner Jessie, which vessel was lying about thirty yards from Peacock’s Wharf, went down to the steps at the breastwork and hailed the craft to send off a boat to bring them aboard. There was only a youth oh board at the time, who had shipped during the day, and was a stranger, none of the hands even knowing his name. The youth on being hailed, after answering, Was seen to haul up the boat that was lying astern of the vessel, and attempting to get into her, when he suddenly disappeared between the boat and the ship’s side. He Called for assistance three times, and then sank. The men obtained a dingy in a waterlogged state, and pushed off to the scene of the accident, but on arrival there everything was silent. Information having been given to the police, the Sergeant-Major of Police, with his men, went down and endeavoured to recover the body, but were unsuccessful. This morning the police were assisted by the harbour authorities, and the first drag made for the body was successful. The Corpse was moved to the Morgue, and from documents found on it it is supposed that deceased’s name was Ephraim Dentith, and that he came out to Wellington in the ship Teviotdale.
