The ship Canterbury was to sail trom Fort Chalmers, for London, on Tuesday, with a cargo yalued at £111,234. The Anna Dorothea sailed for Hong Kong, from Port Chalmers, on Saturday last. She takes 100 Celestials as passengers for that port. The ketch Agnes has, we are glad to say, arrived safely at Foxton, and is now lying at anchor at that port. It appears that she discharged a portion of her railway iron and got safely off the the beach, and is now finishing the discharge of her carco: Advices, dated Portland (Oregon),Novcinber 27th, state that the United States steamer Shubrick had passed off .Cape Disappointment a barque bottom upwards, supposed to be the Sunbeam. Tbe N.Z.S.S. Co's favourite steamer Phoebe arrived at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. "We are indebted to Captain Worsp lor the following report:—Left Auckland on the 26th ult at 10.30 am; reached Taranaki at 5 a.m. on 27tb, leaving at 11 a.m., ' after taking in passengers and horses, arriving at Nelson at 7 a.m. on 28th; left again at 11.30 a.m., and reached Picton at 9 p.m., leaving at 11 same night, and arriving at Wellington under easy steam at 5 a.m. on the 29th: left at 4.30 p.m. same day, arriving as above. The Phoebe experienced light and variable winds throughout the run. The passenger traffic was unusually large, this favorite boat landing no less than 72 passengers at Wellington, and having between 70 and 80 on board on arrival at this port.' The Phoebe will be docked at Wellington on her return. We thank Mr Barbor, the purser, for files. It is satisfactory to learn that there is every probability of direct steam communication being established between Tasmania and New Zealand. At the recent meeting of the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company, held at Hobart Town, the chairman of the Board of Directors expressed the opinion that the time had arrived when Tasmania ought to try a steam vessel to New Zealand, for which he thought the Government ought to give a small subsidy. He wished the shareholders to give some consideration to the subject, for if the company would not take up the work, whether it paid or not, it would very soon be taken up for them.— " Evening News."
