C. 8.0. MAIDEN PAIRS.
The competition for pewters presented by the C. R.C, for the pair-oared race by merabere who have not won a prize, took place on Saturday over a mile course, finishing af Herdscn’s, and produced some of the best races we have had during the season. Four pairs entered, the boats used being tne Mon and the Tui.
The first heat was won by Vincent and Brewster in the Moa, and would have, ncen a very closely contested on ? had not the bow of the Tui displayed a proclivity for crab catching, which interfered somewhat with the progress of the boat. The second heat fell to Hadfield and Tancred. and was a well pulled race from start to finish. Between this and the deciding heat Mr Jones, captain of the 0.R.C., organised a sweepstakes to be rowed for by coxswains, which produced the greatest fun of the dav, the little fellows going “ eyes out ” from the start, and all pulling pluckily. Day and Lawson in the Tui managed to pull both heats off. The deciding heat for the Maiden Pairs, between Vincent and Brewster, and Hadfield and Tancred, was a splendidly contested race, as the boats stuck closely to each other to within a few yards of the winning post, when the former cried a-go, not being in such good staying form as their opponents* Hadfield and Tancred therefore are the recipients of the pewters. The contest for the representative at the Heathcote Regatta has been postponed, and will take place some evening during the week. We may note that Knox’s four for the Heathcote were out for practice, and seemed to be doing good work. No 2 wants to get forward a little quicker, but with this exception the crew swing well together, and will make the pace a very warm one on the regatta day. The Heathcote boys were also out, and shaped well. We append the details of Saturday’s racing:— Maiden Pairs for Members of C.R.O. who have not taken a prize. ’One mile. Prize, pewters given by the club. FIRST HEAT.
Moa (Brewster, bow ; Vincent, stroke ; Mann, cox.) _ 1 Tui (Jacobsen, bow ; Morris, stroke ;
Day, cox,) 2 Mr Herdson got the boats away to a good start, the Moa taking the water first, and getting a slight lead. After a few strokes, the Tui got on even terms with them, and a neck an! neck race for about a hundred yards ensued. The bow of the Tui, however, caught a crab, which resulted in his assuming a recumbent position in the boat. The Moa then got a clear lead of some three lengths, was never headed, and won by about six lengths. SECOND HEAT. Tui (Hadfield, bow ; Tancred, stroke ; Day, COX.) J Moa (Dawson, bow; Caverhill, stroke; Mann, cox.) .2 A good start was effected, the Moa being quickest away, and holding a lead, with the Tui in close attendance, the pace being very warm. Off Pratt’s corner, Dawson’s oar slipped and strained his wrist, and the Tui then took the lead by about a length. Dp the reach the Moa made a good fight, and a capital race ensued, but the Tui still held the lead, winning ultimately by about two lengths. DECIDING HEAT.
