ENGLAND v. COLONIES.

This match was continued on Saturday last, England being 69 runs behind on the first innings. At about 2 30 p.m. the Colonies took the field. 0. Frith and J. Fowler being their early, bowlers. H. W. Moore and Leach going first to the wickets for England. Before ten appeared on the telegraph, H. W. Moore gave a chance to mid-off, but escaped. After this there was a fine display of batting —both batsmen playing the bowling in good Style. A piece of good fortune happened to Moore, who hit the off bail so hard with his bat that he split it, but he did not displace it. The score gradually increased, the fielding for some unaccountable reason being very loose at first, but towards the close of the innings this state of things improved with one or two exceptions. At 34, 0. Frith dis- : posed of H. W. Moore, who bad made 24 by a 4, six 2’s, and singles. Oorfe was next, and soon put together 20 by two grand drives to the off from Fuller for 5 each, a 4, a cut off the same bowler, two 2’s, and 2 singles. A change was now tried in the bowling, W. Frith relieving Fuller. This had the desired effect, as the new bowler succeeded in getting Corfe’s wicket in his second over—two for 61. Ashby filled the vacancy, but after making a fine on-drive for 4 off 0. Frith and 3 singles he was dismissed by that bowler—three for 72. Souter came and retired without scoring, a good catch at short slipbyß.Fowlerdisposing of him—four for 76. Stevens assisted the score a little, but a good ball from W. Frith proved too much for him—five for 81. Dickinson remained while Leach addel 7 to the total, and then gave a chance to Kent, which was well taken—6 for 88. Sweet made a couple, but then tried a drive to the off, but put the ball up to third man, which was well secured by Kent. Alpe followed, and, after being let off by Ollivier at short-stop, and J.Fowler at cover-point, gave some little trouble. A change was then made iu the bowling, Fuller relieving W. Frith at the southend, while C. Frith gave up the ball to his brother. The change was again successful, as Alpe was bowled off his pad by W. Frith. A. C. Wilson gave a chance to Ollivier, which was not missed —eight and nine for 118. Neilson to the assistance of Leach, who. then

made a good drive to the off for 4. The third ball of W. Frith’s next over proved fatal to Neilson, and the innings closed for 117—Leach being not out for 48, having played a splendid defensive innings without a chance. His cutting was very fine. His principal hits were three 4’s, a 3, and nine 2’s. With 60 runs to get to win, Ollivier and Wood, after a short interval, set about the task, but an unfortunate misjudgment by Wood, and a fine piece of fielding, caused Ollivier’s retirement—one for 6. Dixon took the vacant place, and hit the slows for two 3’s before he skied one, which was held by the bowler-two for 16. J. Fowler now came in, and with Wood played till time was called, the score showing 42 for the loss of two wickets, both batsmen having played steadily. The match will be played out on Saturday next. The match was commenced on last Saturday week and finished last Saturday. In the first innings Papanui were very unfortunate, putting together only 30, U. Dickinson being the only one who reached double figures ; but in their second W. Horner and Matson got together, and by good free hitting made 37 and 30 not out respectively, the innings closing for 96. or a grand total of 126. The U.0.0.C. made 95 in their first innings, to which Dawe was the principal contributor, with a carefully played 25. They had thus 32 runs to get to win, which were obtained after a loss of three wickets. B. Cotterill made a splendid on drive, as also did Macquarie. The U.C.C.O. therefore won the match by seven wickets. The following is the score : PAPANUI. Ist Innings. 2nd Innings. T. Hill, c B. Cotterill, bH. Cotterill ... 1b H. Cotterill 3 J. W.
