(Per Press Agency.') Auckland, Dec 28. Arrived —Au Revoir, schooner, from Sydney, after twenty days passage; Julia Price, from Norfolk Island. Departures—Wellington, s.s, for South ; Star of Germany for Newcastle; Ocean Wave, schooner, for Levuka; Letitia, schooner, for Tongatabu ; Josephine, schooner, for Levuka. Auckland, December 28. In reply to a deputation, Sir George Grey has consented to contest the seat for the Thames. Mr Robert Graham will stand with him. The criminal calendar contains five charges of wilful murder against four persons. Mr O’Borke received a vote of confidence at a meeting of electors last night. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company received the following telegram from London, dated December 9th “ Wool—Competition is’increasing in this marke*, and it is firmer. Dp to date 68,000 bales have been sold. Tallow firm—Mutton, 51s ; beef, 48s per cwt. Leather—The best sales showed £d decline on previous rates.
Adelaide wheat is worth 54s ; New Zealand, 53s per 4961b5. December 16.
“ The wool sales closed firmly ; the sales comprise 105,000 bales, and 800 bales have been withdrawn. During the past sales 30,000 bales have been taken for export, A good many second hand parcels were offered during the past sales. Trade in the manufacturing districts is unchanged. The next sales commence on the 15th February.” Wellington, Dec. 28.
Aplins’ music shop on Lambton Quay was burned down about four this morning. The stock was insured for £4OO in the Standard, and £4OO in the Imperial ; the building for £4OO in the Standard.. The value of the stock destroyed is said to be about £IBOO. The origin of the fire is unknown. When first seen the flames were issuing from a skylight in the roof. The house was uninhabited.
Sapphire Mai, the murderer, was caught in the bush yesterday. After running half a mile, when discovered, he gave in without resistance, and was brought up this morning, but was at once sent off to hospital to be identified by the dying men. The case stands adjourned. This afternoon a quantity of the Cook’s Straits cable, which had been coiled away under the telegraph office, was taken on board the Luna. The rest of it will all be taken on board to-morrow, and a start made on Thursday, Dunedin, December 28. An enquiry is to be held into the George street fire.
Mrs M‘Laren,who jumped on her husband’s chest and killed him, has been removed to the Lunatic Asylum as insane. There are eight cases, all light, for trial at the sessions,
