NEWS OF THE DAY.
Concert.—A concert in aid of the Catholic schools will bo given this evening at the Barbadoes street schoolroom. Torchlight Procession.—A notice to the members of the fire brigades and the fire police appears in another column. Chbistchurch Volunteer Artillery. —The commanding officer will hold a special monthly inspection of this corps to-night. Every member is requested to be present. C.J.C.—A general meeting of the above club will be held at Warner's hotel tomorrow evening, at -1 o'clock, to consider the autumn programme and other business. Ashley Election.—lt ia currently reported that Mr JR. L. fliggins has retired from the contest for this election in favor of Mr W. M. Maskell. Lyttelton Yacht Club.—The Fleetwing sailed for Akaroa last night. There was a light N.E. wind, and should it have lasted during the night no doubt the yacht will be in Akaroa harbor early this morning. Telegraphic.— The steamer Cclima is expected to leave Auckland at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the loth inst. Telegrams for the Australian Colonies, or Europe via Java cable, will be received at the Christchurch telegraph office, for transmission to Auckland, up till 1 p.m. of the 15th inst. Fire at Ashburton. —A fire broke out about two o'clock on Sunday morning on the premises of Messrs Digby and Sons, Ashburton. With the assistance of neighbors the flames were eventually got under, but not before property to the value of £l5O was destroyed. The property was insured. The cause of the fire is unknown. The Elections.—The following meetings will be held this evening :—Lincoln road, Taylor's ball room, Mr E. J. Wakefield at 7 30; Colombo road school, Hon B. Richardson, at 7.30; United Meuiodist Free (hurcb school, Addingtou, Mr Andrews, at 8 ; Knightstowu reading-room, Mr Moorhouse, at 7.30; Templetou, Mr Rolleston, ,i 7 30 ; Halswr-ll school. Mr Fisher, at 7.30; Uungiora Literary Institute, Hon C. C. Bowen, at 7 30. Protestant Alliance Friendly Society. - The first anniversary of th> above society was celebrated last evening by a soiree held in the Orange Hall, Worcester street. The chair was occupied by H. G. Bone, W.M., supported on the right by the K'w and on the left by the Rev H 0. M. Watson A very excellent t-a was provided, to which between 300 and 4( 0 I ersons sat down. After the tables had been cleared away, the chairman gave a detailed account of the progress of the order in Sydney, which numbered now about 5000 members, and he hoped the order in New Zealand would soon number as many member". The meeting was also addressed by the Revs C. Fraser and H. C. M. Watson During the evening some excellent songs were sung by members of the order.
