NEWS OF THE DAY.

Lyttelton Election. —Mr MurrayAynsley will address the electors this evening at Lyttelton.

Avon Election.—Mr Rolleston will address a meeting of the electors this evening, at the old schoolhouse, Riccarton, at 7.30. Nomination of Mayor for Lyttelton. —This nomination took place yesterday, Dr J. T, Rouse, the present Mayor, being the only gentleman nominated. He will be declared duly elected on the 17th. Christchurch Election.—The following meetings will be held thia evening :—Mr Stevens, at Colombo road school, at 7.30 ; Hon E, Richardson, Knightstown Readingroom, at 7.30, and Mr E. J. Wakefield, at ll*j Oddfellows' Hall, at 7.30 to-morrow. San Francisco Mail.—-The s.s. Taupo arrived in harbour this morning, having on board the, above mail. It was forwarded to Christchurch by the midday luggage train, arriving shortly before the departure of the 12.30 train from Christchurch. Colombo Road School Treat.—The annual treat to the children attending the Colombo road school will take place on Saturday next at the Agricultural Show Grounds. The prizes will be distributed in the schoolroom in the afternoon at five o'clock. The Elections.—lt is notified that the elections for Kaiapoi, Heathcote, and Akaroa, will take place as undermentioned : —Kaiapoi, nomination, 18th December; polling, 21st December. Heathcote, nomination, 29th December; polling, 4th January. Akaroa, nomination, 18th December; polling, 2''th December. City Guards Inspection.—This company was inspected last evening at the drill nhed by the Colonel commanding the district. . At the termination of the inspection, the men were put through company drill, and were afterwards' exercised in target practice, with the Sniders lately issued, each man firing six rounds of blank cartridge. Lincoln Sheep. —We called special at tention at the time of the late show to some Lincoln ewes, imported and exhibited by Mr Morten, for which he took one first prize and association's medal for best ewe on the ground, one third prize and a highly commended for a pen of three. The above sheep have recently been shorn, the first prize ewe's fleece weighing 21£lb ; one of the three highly commended, 19£lb ; and the third prize, 17|lb. Two of the ewes have lambs at their side. Tradesmen's and Mechanics' Loan Society.—The annual meeting of this society was held last evening in the side room of the Foresters' Hall, and was well attended. Mr John Atkinson occupied the chair. The report congratulated the members that at this the fifteenth annual meeting there were neither losses nor doubtful cases to report. The adoption of the principle in most cases of taking real security instead of personal had slightly narrowed the operations of the society, but at the same time the risk was diminished. The committee had the pleasure to report that the society was in a position to declare a dividend of 10 per cent on the year just closed, and that the business transacted during the year compared favourably with that done in former years. The report was received and adopted. Messrs Pengelly and Cunningham were re-elected members of committee. After a vote of thanks to the chairman, the committee, and secretary, the meeting separated. A.0.F., Lyttelton.—The quarterly meeting of Court Queen of the Isles, A.O.F, 2703, Lyttelton, was held on Wednesday night. There was a large attendance of members, also a number of visitors from other lodges. C.B. Bro George Agar occupied the chair. The balance-sheet for the past half year was received and approved. An important decision was given by the committee appointed to enquire as to whether the sick pay to members could be increase- tucj reported that they h*" 1 --"stated the tables of the !,„„* actuaries, especially that of the A.0.0.F., and had come to a conclusion that by a slight increase in the amount of the contributions paid by members they could be assured in case of sickness the sum of £1 per week for six months, 10s per week for a further six months, and 5s per week continously ; also £2O in case of member's death, and £lO in case of member's wife's death. The report was unanimously approved and adopted, and a vote of thanks passed to the committee. Bros H. Allwright and J. S. Willcox were appointed delegates at the ensuing half-yearly district meeting. It was resolved that the hall be lighted with gas. Bro Hester, who had served the office of treasurer, was presented with a medal with an inscription, for his past services. The 'committee re the Foresters' fete reported that a suitable site in Cashel street, well shaded by trees, had been decided upon, and that in addition to the many silver cups on the programme, Bro Allright had presented one, and that Bro McDonald had presented a splendid meerschaum pipe for a race,

Foresters' Fete.—The fete committee, consisting of the Ohristchurch and Lyttelton courts, met last evening in the Foresters' Hall. It was resolved that the fete should be held on Boxing Day, in a paddock in Cashel street, belonging to Mr J. Oram Sheppard, where every requisite will be provided for carrying out the sports. The engineers' band was engaged to play during the day. It was decided that the Christchurch brethren, in uniform, meet the Port brethren at the railway station, and march in procession to the grounds, headed by the band. The Lyttelton court reported that several additional prizes, consisting of silver cups and valuable meershaum pipes, had been presented by the Lyttelton brethren. It was resolved that the refreshment booths be submitted to public auction by Mr Alport early next week. A programme, consisting of foot races, a Richardson's show, Aunt Sally, Punch and Judy, dancing, quoits, and archery, was submitted. and approved. The committee determined to permit no tables, games of chance, or sales by private individuals on the ground. Should the weather prove fine, the committee anticipate an excellent day's amusement, and a large attendance of brethren and friends. Conversazione.—The anniversary of the Canterbury Presbyterian Church Extension Association was celebrated last evening by a conversazione, which was largely attended, in the Oddfellows'Hall. The chair was taken by Mr R. L. Higginß, the president of the association, who gave an address. The report of the committee for 1874, with an abstract of the treasurer's accounts, duly audited, were read, and printed copies distributed. Addresses were delivered by Revs W. S. McGowan, C. Fraser, Will, and Allan (Otago), Hill, Barclay, and Horner, and Dr Campbell, D. Craig, and other gentlemen. The following were elected office bearers for the ensuing year:—President, Mr David Craig ; Vice-Presidents, Rev C. Fraser, Rev W. S; McGowan, and Mr R. L. Higgins ; treasurer, Mr W. Gavin ; secretaries, Messrs A. Duncan and R. Sutherland ; committee— Messrs J. Anderson, J. Tait, R. Black, J. M. Watt, R; Wilkin, D. Duncan, Morgan, J. Miln, R. W. Black, P. Cunningham, J, Cameron, J. Paton, J. D. Macpherson, A. Johnston, W. Henderson, and Dr Campbell. During the evening several pieces of vocal music were well rendered by the choir, with harmonium accompaniment. Refreshments were handed round at intervals. H.A.C.B. Society.—. The quarterly meeting of the above society was held last evening at the Barbadoes street schoolroom for the purpose of nominating officers for the next term and receiving the report of the fete committee. The following officers were nominated:—President, Bro E. O'Connor; vice-president, Bro J. B. Sheath; treasurer, Bro J. Hogan ; secretary, Bro Austin P, Sheath. The Rev Father M'Guinness, chaplain to the society, was present and delivered an eloquent address. Bro E. O'Connor, acting secretary to the fete committee, reported that the fete promised to be a complete success; the programme would consist of athletic and other sports, and be held in the priest's paddock. The children attending the Catholic schools at Ohristchurch, Lyttelton, Rangiora, and Shand's track, had been invited to join in the day's amusement, and a band, consisting of fifteen performers, had been engaged to play all day. The day's proceedings would wind up with a dinner in the evening for members and friends. There was a large attendance of members at the meeting, and contributions amounting to £sl were received. East Ohristchurch School Committee.—The usual meeting of the committee was held last evening, in the vestry of Trinity Church. Present—Rev W. J. Habens (chairman), Messrs Jamieson, Mitchell, Col-borne-Veel, Kirk, and Bray. Some; correspondence was read with reference to the Avonside school, and after some discussion it was resolved to repair the damage for .which the committee are liable. Letters were read from the Education Office, sanctioning the draining and levelling at Bings land, and stating that a lump sum would be placed on the estimates for gymnastic appa ratus for schools not provided with them : that £lO for planting each school site was at the disposal of the committee. The Minister als ' forwarded plans of master's house at Gloucester street, asking if the com mittee hud any suggestions to make. The preliminary arrangements having been made for draining the Bingsland school ground, Mr Bray was authorised to arrange to have the drains cut. The plans of the master's house were considered, and the chairman was requested to communicate the committee's opinion to the Minister, that they would prefer a wooden house to one of wood and brick combined, as the saving would allotv of larger rooms than shown on the plans. The estimates of monies to be spent on school sites and buildings throughout the district were considered, and passed as submitted. Among the items included in the estimates were a side school at Phillipstown, caretaker's house at South belt school, and a site for an infants' school at Gloucester street. Certain requests from Mr Loughrey, re arrangement of school furniture, &o, were complied with. The following is the list of attendance during the week :—Boys : Monday, 397; Tuesday, 408; Wednesday, 398; Thursday, 400. Girls—Monday, 262; Tuesday, 268; Wednesday, 267 ; Thursday, 2tss. infanta Monday, 206 ; Tuesday, 180; Wednesday, 200 ; Thursday, 190. The number on the register was—Boys, 481; girls, 331 ; infants, 342 ; total, 1054. Mr Loughrey also forwarded the names of 34 children under five year» who were attending the school. It was resolved that the children named be ! permitted to remain at the school in consideration of their paying 2s 6d per quarter in advance. The chairman was authorised to sign the list. The secretary was instructed to effect a transfer of the amounts for school books in the hands of various teachers to Mr Sopp_ aad_ Mrs Haughton to the amounts of £25 and ~&\& wmpectively. A letter was read from Mr R. P. Crosbie pointing out the hardship of children living in his neighborhood having to attend the Gloucester street school, instead of the one at Bingsland. An opinion was expressed that Mr Crosbie was wrong in his estimate of the difference in distance between the two schools from Stanmore bridge, and the letter was left in the hands of the chairman to reply to. After some consideration, it was resolved that Mr Taylor be appointed third master at the main school. The chairman was asked to confer with the Minister of Education, and point out, in view of the present large attendance, the necessity for appointing a fourth master at the main school, and also a master at BiDgsland school. It was decided that the next meeting of the committee should be held that day fortnight. Several accounts were passed for payment,
