BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LYTTELTON. A meeting of this Council was held on Monday evening last; present, his Worship the Mayor, and all the Councillors. The clerk stated he had received £3O 2s Sd during the week. Correspondence was read— From the Secretary for Public Works, in reference to water supply, stating that pipes and machinery were now on their way out from England, and if no accident occurred would probably be landed and the engine erected in about six months, and that by that time the Corporation should have completed their town services. From the Provincial Engineer, in reference to diverting the Eastern water course in Winchester street, recommending the diversion suggested, as a large saving would be effected in the construction of sewers. From J. King and Co, asking permission to erect a sign board across the footpath in London street. From Insurance Association, enclosing cheque for £4O, for use of fire brigade. With regard to the request from Messrs J. King and Co, the clerk was instructed to write that the request could not be allowed, without a verandah was erected. On the motion of Cr Cunningham, the £4O cheque from the Insurance Companies was handed over to the superintendent of the fire brigade. A report from the foreman of works was then read, urging the necessity of having the 322nd clause of the Municipal Act strictly put in force. The custodian of the bathing shed reported that 370 persons had used the bathing shed during the past month. It was resolved that 7s per week be charged to the bathing shed, and 6s per week to the Dampier's Bay road, the sum to be paid to the foreman of works for his attendance at the shed. It was resolved to call attention of the police to people bathing off a vessel near the bathing shed. It was resolved to make good the damages to the asphalte caused by laying the gas mains, the Gas Company repaying the Council. It was resolved that the Mayor should see the Minister for Public Works, with reference to asphalting round the new Government Buildings. The report of the lighting committee was read. It stated the cost for the maintenance of sixteen lamps in the principal part of the town would be £8 10s per lamp, making a total of £136. This would include lighting, cleaning, &c. Cr Allwright moved the adoption of the report, not to come into force except by resolution of the Council. Cr Chalmers seconded this, which were carried unanimously. Accounts, amounting to £3l 17s, was passed for payment. A long discussion ensued in reference to the water supply, and it was eventually determined that the finance committee should bring up a report of ways and means next Monday night. The Council then adjourned.
