The Harbor Board have decided at a sitting of the works committee to-day to ask Mr Erriugton to prepare plans and specifications for a dock 300 feet long and twelve feet deep. Mr Bull, a former member of the House of Representatives, announces his candidature for Marsde*. Grahamstown, December 7. At a special meeting of the Resident Magistrate's Court, held to day, Rrpana Maunganoa was charged with assaulting Judge Muuro. The Judge had just delivered judgment in the Native Lands Court in a ease in which Rapana was concerned, and adjourned the Court, On attempting to leave the Court, Judge Muuro was met by Rapana, who pushed him back repeatedly. The Judge said he had only two alternatives, “to knock Rapana down, or send fur a policeman.” He chose the latter. Rapana, in reply to the charge, said hi; was ilaik ” about his land being ' taken away, and they could now take him. The magistrate said if Rapana had been a blustering native, he would have sent him to prison without the option of a fine, but as Rapana was generally quiet and peaceable, he would fine him £lO or a month’s imprisonment. The fine was paid, although Rapana said that he would not pay. Mr Howell Williams, a well known tradesman, formerly captain of the volunteers and a prominent Orangeman, died to-day after a few hours’ illness. He made a proposal for insuring his life in the Government office a short time back, but neglected or declined to pay the premium charged. New Plymouth, December 7. The Railway Compensation Court sat yesterday, to hear the claims of Mr Charles Brown for £IOOO for depreciation of property caused by the street being diverted and loss of river and sea frontage. A large number of witnesses were examined, whose opinions as to the value of property were very wide apart. The Court decided that Mr Brown was entitled to £6OO damages agaiust the Government, Wellington, December S. There has been a tremendous gale and heavy rain all night, and it is still unabated. The Hutt races are postponed in consequence, until the weather clears up. A couple of boats and several persons are reported missing, Oamaru, December 8. The North Otago Times announces that from the Ist January next it will be published daily. The proprietors also announce their intention of publishing a weekly at an early date, under the title of the North Otago Standard. DUNbdin, December 7, A fire broke out at two o’clock this afternoon on the premises of Mr John Hyde Harris, in Leith street. The house, which is a large one, contained a valuable collection of paintings, old curiosities, relics, &c, the labor of many years. The hose on the premises saved the house from total destruction. It originated in the drawing room through a faulty chimney. The insurance is £1250 in the Norwich Union on the house and furniture, and £1250 in the Victoria. This will nothing like cover the damage done. The immense quantity of water did more harm than the fire. Bir Dillon Bell will address the electors of Waikouaiti, in the Temperance Hall here, this evening. Mr T. R, Shepherd addresses the Dunstan electors in a few days. Ho will contest his old seat. The ship Adamant had an extraordinary passage to the Bluff. Captain Birch was mu ;h given to drink. He kept the ship sailing about the coast of Brazil for three weeks. He got on a sane bank within hail of shore, and the natives walked up to the ship and conversed with those on board. The first mate at last took command, and the captain shortly after died, The provisions vvere nearly eshauited,
