MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
OHBIBTGHUBGH. Tuesday, November 30. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Drunk and Disorderly.—Anne Griffith Tilley was charged this offence, and also with wilfully damaging Government property. There was also another charge against accused of wilfully destroying private property. Henry Tilley, the husband of the prisoner, was charged with being drunk and assaulting the police in the execution of their duty, in trying to rescue a prisoner. Both cases were heard together. From the evidence of the arresting constable, it appeared that he saw Anne Tilley in Lichfield street, at about 5.20 p.m. yesterday. She was drunk and disorderlj, and he arrestsd hev. When he did so, the male prisoner struck him violently, and both the prisoners were violent. A cabman, named Waiter Cook, gave evidence as to the damage done to his cab by the conduct of the female prisoner. The male prisoner pleaded guilty, but said he was excited by the conduct of constable in arresting his (prisoner's) wife. Tha female prisoner had nothing to say. The Bench fined Anne Tilly ss, and damages and cab hire, 18s. Henry Tilley was fined 40s, and cab hire, 2s. Lunacy.—Philip Carey, on remand, was brought up. He was again remanded for eight days. Reuben Cook, who had been remanded to Lyttelton for medical treatment, was discharged, as it appeared he had recovered. Drunk and Disorderly.—Mary Brighting was charged with the above offence. Fined 5s and cab hire 2s. Larceny.—Robert Crowther was brought up on a charge of stealing five knives and three forks, the property of Arthur Walker,' Colombo street. Detective Thomson deposed to the arrest of the prisoner last night. Charged him with the offence. Prisoner made no reply. Knives and forks produced were received from Mr Donaldson, dealer, yesterday morning. Mrs Walker, wife of Arthur Walker, said she kept a refreshment room in Colombo street. Prisoner came in on last Friday evening, and had some refreshment. On Saturday morning missed five knives and three forks. They were in the room when prisoner had been served. Those produced are the same. The value of them was about Bs. James Donaldson, general dealer, saw prisoner at his place on Friday evening last. Offered witness the knives and forks produced. Ultimately, bought them from him. Gave them up to the detective yesterday morning. Prisoner said he had always lived an honest life. He was hard up, and had taken the articles in order to obtain a bed. The Bench sentenced Prisoner to fourteen days' imprisonment with hard labour. The property to be given up to the owner.
