COMMERCIAL.

Next to nothing has been done in the grain market during the week. Prime wheat continues In fair demand for milling purposes. Oats are very difficult to move, and only best quality Is at all enquired for, A slight Improvement is noticeable in flour, and millers are not anxious to sell in quantity at present prices. Potatoes continue very dull, business being quite confined to transactions of a retail character. New butter is now coming in freely, and prices are consequently steadily falling. Old cheese continues very scarce, and commands a fair figure for export. Sales of hams and bacon are light, although prices are so much easier. Buyers’ prices are Prime milling wheat, 4s ;do oats, 2s 3d; barley, unsaleable; flour, £9 10s in sacks, £9 17s 6d in 100-lb bags, £lO 5s in 50-lb bags; bran, £4 10s; sharps, £5 10s ; butter, Bsd: cheese, 8d; hams and bacon, cloth, lid. We have very little alteration to report in the import markets, business continues dull, and with the exception of a few sales in leading lines, there are no sales of note to record. Stocks ot sugar have been considerably augmented by the arrival ot the, John Kendall, from Mauritius, on the 21st instant bringing about 250 tons sugar, which we understand is consigned to two or three merchants here. The ships Merope and Waikato are rapidly tilling up with wheat, wool, &c, for London, and will have quick despatch. Mauritius Sugars—Several trade sales have been effected in these lines at full rates ; a line of 400 pockets ration sugar has been taken up at about £36 d.p. ex John Kendall. Teas have come in for a fair amount of attention from the trade, at satisfactory rates. Bottled Ales and Stouts—A line oi 150 cases Bass’s ale, bottled by Part, has changed hands at price withheld ; a large parcel of Blood Wolte’s stout, to arrive, has been offered at lls 6d; several small sales have been reported at 12s to 12s 3d. Bass’s Bulk Ale—A shipment now in port has been quitted at £9 10s to £9 15s. In spirits we have not much to report, small parcels of case and bulk Hennessy’s brandy have been disposed at 32s and 8s 6d respectively ; bulk old tom (Swain Bord’s) has changed hands at ss, LB., for parcels. Tobaccocs are dull; best twist brands (in cases) are quoted at Is Bsd to Is Bjd, 1.8., for large parcels, and i-tierces OJd per lb less. Cement is in very good demand at 21s 6d, delivered in Christchurch. We note the Government have just accepted a tender for 500 casks, delivered at Addington, at the above figure. Galvanized iron—Parcels now in port have been offering at £34 10s, Gospel Oak and Orb brands, 6to Bft lengths. Fine salt has sold freely at £4 15s to £5 per ton. The cargo of timber, shingles, and palings, ex Italy, were offered at public auction on Thursday. The biddings were extremely low, and what little was sold must show a considerable loss to importers. We understand the balance of shingles and palings have been placed privately at prices which show a great reduction on last auction rates.
