The “Register” gives the following account of a nice ki id of a vessel that was detained at Plymouth In August last, because of her unseaworthiness :—“Seventeen of the seamen of thi ship Sunbeam, 988 tons, now lying in Plymouth Sound, were charged before the local Bench, by Captain Dalziel, with refusing to go to sea. Their defence was that the ship was unseaworthy. Captain Stott, R.N., Board of Trade Surveyor, was ordered by the Bench to make a survey. He reported the jibboom as rotten, the planks under the forecastle by the port cathead as rotten, and the caulking bad ; the butts of the mainstay and maintopmast stays as completely gone, to the great danger of the mainmast. The deck-house for the crew was in a bad condition, the mlzenmast very unsafe, the caulking round the starboard bow bad, and the running rigging bad, and only a small quantity of spars and rope on board; the sails old, and required overhauling. He did not proceed further with his survey, as these defects rendered the ship unfit to go to sea The magistrates at once ordered the men to be discharged. A notice appears in the “ New Zealand Gazette, of the 4th Instant, to the effect that charts of the Kaiourangi shoal and the entrance to the Buller River may be obtained, on application, at the Custom Houses in the principal shipping ports. This has been deemed necessaiy, in consequence of a previously unknown shoal having been discovered lately off the west coast of the Middle Island, near the Kaiourangi.
