NEWS OF THE DAY.
C.J.C—A committee meeting of the C.J.C. will be held at Warner's Hotel this evening at eight o'clock. Wheeler Troupe.—This clever troupe will appear again this evening at the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton, in a good programme.
Fire Police.—A special meeting of the fire police is convened at the Fire Brigade Hall, Lichfield street, to-morrow evening, at 7.30, to consider important business.
Entertainment. —An entertainment was given last evening by the children of the West Christchurch School (Normal School), in the Wesleyan Sabbath School, Durham street, in aid of the prize fund. There was a good attendance, Mr J. P. Restell occupying the chair. The programme comprised some capital songs by the children, and recitations, together with instrumental pieces. Departure of His Excellency the Governor.—The Marquis of Norman by and suite, accompanied by his Honor the Superintendent, Hon 0. C. Bowen, Sir J. Cracroft Wilson, Colonels Brett and Packe, and Messrs J. L. Coster, A. Wilson, Parker, and Harper, arrived by special train in Lyttelton at 2.30 p.m., and proceeded on board H.M.S. Sappho in the ship's boats. Captain GibsoD, the harbormaster, was in attendance, and brought back those gentlemen who did not proceed to Wellington, the Governor and suite and the Hon C. 0. Bowen being the only ones who went. The Sappho sailed punctually at 3 p.m.
The Murray Memorial Committee. — A meeting of this committee was held in the Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton, on Saturday night last, Mr J. Yule in the chair. The chairman reported that the monument was about completed, when it was ordered that the hon treasurer send a cheque for the amount to the contractor. The monument, which is Gothic in design with flower draped vase and pannelled front, looks exceedingly well. The ground is completely enclosed with a stone balustrade and coping, the whole work reflecting great credit on Mr W. Stocks, the contractor. The memorial simply states it has been erected by his fellow townsmen as a tribute of respect for his many acts of charity. . Popular Entertainment Association.—A general meeting of this association was held yesterday at the Council Chambers. Present —His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), the Rev C. Fraser, and Messrs Wynn Williams, S. P. Andrews, R. P. Crosbie, C. Walkden, J. Ollivier, and J. A. Bird. Mr Wynn Williams made a statement of the financial position of the association, and said he would have to resign the post of hon treasurer, as he had not sufficient time to devote to the duties. Through the death of Mr Gordon they had lost their secretary, and it would be necessary to elect another He trusted that all the old members would attend the meetings, and take the matter up warmly this year. Mr Ollivier undertook to take charge of th« collecting list, Mr Wynn Williams undertaking ou that condition to continue to act as treasurer. The appointment of a secretary was deferred until next meeting. After some discussion it was resolved that a walking race of two miles, a handicap mile race, and a two-mile race, the latter for a cup of the value of ten guineas—all these events to be open to all comers, not professionals—be among the events at the coming meeting, and that the programme as a whole be assimilated to that of last year. It was determined to postpone calling for tenders for the grand stand until next Friday, Mr Walkden promising then to submit a proposal for the erection of a stand to become the property of the association Mr Walkden also promised to see that the running ground was placed in order. '1 he meeting then adjourned until Friday next at four o'clock, when officers will be elected, and arrangements made for the meeting The progress report of- the treasurer will also be read on that day,
Ho y ound —Th<! bodv of Mr Bullock, \ho hai t>eeu initio troiu home for some fourteen days, was found yesterday floating in the river near New Brighton by the landlord of the New Brighton Hotel. It is supposed that the deceased, who was of weak intellect, wandered into the river during the night and was drowned. An inquest will be held in due course,
